News: Cedar Point to remove White Water Landing

Posted at 7:45 PM EDT (2345 GMT)

Oct. 13th, 2005 -- Yesterday, the excitement was building as Cedar Point was getting ready to announce something "big" through Cedar Point's OnPoint blog. At 9:30 am this morning, the "big" announcement was made.

"The end of an era is upon us," wrote Tony and Tyler. "Our good friend White Water Landing will give its last ride forever on October 30, 2005.  This amazing hydro-flume ride has given 28 million rides since it opened in 1982 and it all ends with a drop over a 50-foot waterfall."

The blog gives no clues as to why this ride is to be removed.  As of right now, Cedar Point has not announced anything other than the removal of White Water Landing as well as the sale of Demon Drop, its Intamin 1st generation freefall.

Among the rumors that have been circulating, the park is believed to be announcing a 40 seat S&S Screamin' Swing sometime later this month, which is supported by the apparent ride sections found in the Soak City parking lot.  However, no announcement date has been set.  There have been other rumors floating around, with no evidence giving any of them credibility as of yet.

Cedar Point has said that there will be a contest to anyone willing to mail in a 100 word essay can be the last one to ride White Water Landing, An Arrow Dynamics (now S&S) flume ride.

What you get if you win: Admission for two to Cedar Point on October 30, An official commerative certificate for being the last rider, A Kodak sneek peek with Tony and Tyler in front of the flume, and the very last public ride on White Water Landing.

We will be the first to bring you any news that Cedar Point has to offer.

This is Dorney's White Water Landing predecessor isn't it?

If indeed they sell Demon Drop, one of these spots will obviously be used for the Screamin Swing, unless of course it is placed somewhere else in the park. But demon drop and WWL are a good distance from one another so I'm guessing the park may be getting two flat rides next season. I really don't see these areas being future spots of another coaster because I don't see why CP would remove a ride in 06 for a coaster in 07 when they could still get another season out of it. Two large flat rides would sound right to me.

Eh. It was long overdue for a paint job. I guess they figured what the hay. Lets chuck her. She's ugly now. We'd rather have a plot of dirt than a shabby lookin pile of steel and fiber glass. THPPPP. I'm just messin. Actually its pretty sad because my GF worked on WWL this summer. I did as well, but my main ride was Thunder Canyon. It was always the backup for angry parents who could not bring their kids on TC. We would just send them WWL's way and the kids got to ride a BIG person ride. YAY! The parents rejoice. They had better put in some kind of family water ride after this. But really.....it did need a paint job. ;o)

And the word family becomes less and less important at CP!!!!!! The worlds number one amusement park isn't going to have a traditional log flume, That is a joke!

I didn't think about it before, but that is odd. An amusement park without a flume. Maybe there is somethiong in the works. I've never ridden it. I am not much of a water ride guy. Was the condition that bad?

Flumes are considered by some people and parks to be liabilities because they don't and can't have traditional restraints because the ride vehicle can flip over in the water. It's not unusual for guests to exit the ride vehicles if the ride stops, which is also common for a variety of reasons. Both sides of the big drop on this ride have no operated for several seasons now, so seeing it removed isn't all that surprising.

But with the major accidents that have surrounded giant flumes, and the problems that CF has had with Intamin systems (who are the designers of a lot of water coasters, right?) I'm not entirely sure that the ride will be replaced with a water coaster or giant flume which was the rumor last time I was at the Point (awhile, admittedly). And neither a giant flume or water coaster would particularly be a "family ride" either, which sucks for families, and both have restraint systems that that don't allow for larger adults so those people lose another ride too. Hopefully CF has another plan in mind.

What sucks here is that now you are left with Snake River Falls, guaranteed to soak you, or Thunder Canyon which is random, but if you hit the waterfall head on, you are drenched. One thing a lot of people liked about WWL (I can only assume) is that it got you wet enough to cool you off, but not so wet that you would be wet at the close of the day.

Another reason in a growing list that will keep me from attending Cedar Point ever again.
