Industry Announcements: Hersheypark announces Reese's Xtreme Cup Challenge

Posted at 2:41 PM EDT (1841 GMT)

Oct. 25th, 2005 -- Reese’s Xtreme Cup Challenge, the world’s first interactive dark ride to pit car against car in multi-sensory laser competition, will open for the 2006 season at Hersheypark. The new ride is the result of collaboration between Hersheypark and The Hershey Company, maker of Reese’s peanut butter cups, one of the best-known and best-loved brands in the world.

Two competing teams – chocolate and peanut butter – simultaneously travel through a series of exciting competition zones that feature Reese’s-branded extreme sports events complete with targets. The riders, equipped with customized laser blasters, take aim at the targets and accumulate as many points as possible for their team. At the conclusion of the ride, a winning car (chocolate or peanut butter) is declared . . . but all competitors are rewarded with a sweet sample of Reese’s products.

Manufactured by Sally Corporation of Jacksonville, FL, Reese’s Xtreme Cup Challenge features animated show elements, animatronic sports commentators, multi-sensory components, and a team score updated during the “Take 5 Halftime Report.”

Sally Corporation has been creating magic for amusement parks, attractions, retail centers, and museums since 1977. The company offers custom design services and provides concepts, designs, soundtracks, animatronic characters and props, and a wide array of special effects designed to dazzle all ages.

The Hershey Company (NYSE: HSY) is a leading snack food company and the largest North American manufacturer of quality chocolate and non-chocolate confectionery products. With revenues of over $4 billion and more than 13,000 employees worldwide, The Hershey Company makes such well-known brands as Hershey’s, Reese’s, Hershey’s Kisses, Kit Kat, Almond Joy, Mounds, Jolly Rancher, Twizzlers, Ice Breakers, and Mauna Loa, as well as innovative new products such as Take 5 and Hershey’s Cookies. Visit them at http://www.hersheys.com.

Hersheypark will open for its 99th Season on May 5, 2006. For more information and updates on Reese’s Xtreme Cup Challenge, scheduled to open during May 2006, visit HersheyPA.com or call 1-800-HERSHEY.

I don't know what to think. It sounds good. It is not exactly what I expected but a surprise is always nice.

Not a bad idea, but IMO they should have made the Frequent Faller they were trying for 2005. :P

That sounds pretty crappy if you ask me. Plus, what is it with that claim that it is the first to pit car against car? Men In Black: Alien Attack does that, and I bet there are others that do that too.

I like the sound of it. I trust that they can make this an exciting and creatively themed ride. I'm glad they didn't pursue the Frequent Faller. That would of been a waste of money, it really would of ruined the entrance to the park.

Basically sounds like a cheap knockoff of MIB: Alien Attack.

After seeing the video with the cardboard cutouts, I KNOW that this thing will suck (if I rode it). The vehicles don't even go side by side! This thing will suck.

That was an interesting article. Can we give this ride just a little chance?

I support it coasterdude...I'll give it a chance. As far as I know all of HP's rides have been fun and turn out to be very easy to identify, not that that has much too do with a dark ride but this sounds fun. I am just not really sure what to expect and not every ride with "X-treme" sucks people are just disappointed that it isn't another coaster.

I will give this thing a chance. But how would the Frequent Faller be a waste of money? That thing is IMO one of the most innovative coasters i ever heard of.

How can any of you say this is going to suck? I've never been on a ride made by Sally Corp. that has been close to sucking. They make outstanding dark rides, especially interactive dark rides.

Just because it's not a roller coaster doesn't mean it's going to suck. This isn't Cedar Point. Deal with it.

The Scooby Doo dark rides made by Sally paled in comparison with Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin at WDW, so I'd expect the same thing with this in comparison to MIB.

Why do people cry when they don't get a rollercoaster??? This is a family attraction....Family=Money!!! I think this idea sounds neat. I'll be looking forward to riding this, plus you get candy at the end, why does this "suck" to some of you??

It doesn't suck to me. I think it sounds sweet! (pun totally intended). Actually, I think it sounds kind of bizzare, but creative. I think we should give it a chance. I am confused though as to why they say it is the first like it because of MIB Alien Attack. That is a very cool ride, but I don't think we have seen enough to compare them yet. It's all about the experience you know. I don't think a description of Spiderman at IOA could ever do it justice because that is an experience that you have to have had in order to understand it. Could be pretty cool. I'll wait for the reviews.

If you watch the video, I think you'll understand why most of us are underwhelmed.
