Industry Announcements: Cedar Point announces Skyhawk

Posted at 1:41 PM EST (1841 GMT)

Oct. 31st, 2005 -- Cedar Point has announced their new addition for 2006: Skyhawk. Skyhawk is a 40-passenger S&S Screamin' Swing.

The ride stands 103 feet tall and the arms will swing out to be more than 125 feet high, making it one the highest of its kind. The ride will cost $6 million and will debut at the opening of Cedar Point's 137th season on May 6th, 2006.

There are two arms, each arm holding 20 people, with a total of 40 riders per cycle. The ride will be two minutes long, and the capacity will be about 800 people per hour. The top speed of Skyhawk will be 60 mph.

Riders will get a front view of every swing with nothing blocking their view. They will feel weightlessness on the backswing and a "push" on the way up to the sky. It will drop like a roller coaster, but has no track to support itself.

John Hildebrandt, vice president and general manager of Cedar Point, commented on his childhood when speaking of Skyhawk. "All of us have ridden swings as kids. Imagine riding a swing that is higher than a 12-story building and goes faster than many roller coasters."

ValleyFair!, one of Cedar Point's sister parks, will be receiving the same type of ride. Xtreme Swing will debut at the opening of ValleyFair's 30th anniversary in May 2006.

Construction began just shortly after the park closed on Oct. 30 in the area between Snake River Falls and Cedar Creek Mine Ride. You can keep track of all the progress of this ride on Cedar Point's web cams, and you can see the streaming video on their site at http://www.cedarpoint.com/.

Awesome, it's good to see a park that doesn't incorporate the word "Swing" into the name of the ride. I look forward to riding this next season, even though Kennywood is getting one as well.

Im glad to see Cedar Point going to the thrill rides instead of rollercoasters. This addition just makes it more diverse

*shock* CP is getting something that Kennywood is!

These are a lot of fun and will be a great addition to the CP line up.

Sounds interesting, would've prefered a coaster though of course.

Not a bad addition. We all saw it coming.

The name is good for this ride. It doesn't have the word Swing or Extreme. I think this is a bit similar to maXair so it is odd that they are adding it the next year. It should be a great ride though.

This might actually get me back to the Point next year, if for nothing else to ride SkyHawk and MaxAir.

Yes 17 standing coasters, but come on, does flashback really count, it has not operated for quite some time.

Skyhawk looks very enjoyable!

I really wish people would stop saying this ride is going to be similar to maXair...I mean come on, the only thing they have in come is that they swing. It's quite obvious they offer two totally difference experiences. Skyhawk uses compressed air which will be able to accelerate the cars much much faster than maXair, that needs a few swings to get to full swing. Believe me, CP wouldn't invest in this ride if they thought it was going to be similar to CP, it's just too bad they didn't get a SWAT or Jump 2 with this thing. Oh well, 2007 is just around the corner...well not really.

In addition to the previous response, California has more roller coasters than Ohio. PGA, SFMM, SFMW, Knott's, and the Disney Parks make California the roller coaster capital of the world.

I think the state contest is like 72-48 right now. But if you break that down per square mileage...

and I think the traditional battle is between SFMM and CP. It really has not been that heated as of late. Either way makes for good riding every year at both places.

I am sure there are plans for another coaster next year at the point. Big year, I hear, depending on who you ask. But the swing will be a good draw.

You guys realize this made ARN&R?

By the way, you guys are way off topic now... this is supposed to be about Skyhawk, and not about who has more coasters. After all, this site is for thrill seekers, and not just coaster enthusiasts!

I'd be surprised to find that Skyhawk brings any attention to the park. I've never really seen any flatride draw much attention to any park, including drop towers.
