News: Libertyland shutting down after board vote

Posted at 6:56 PM EST (2356 GMT)

Nov. 3rd, 2005 -- It seems as though another amusement park is gone. Today the board of Memphis' Libertyland park voted to shut the park down, citing an ongoing financially-dire situation. The park has repeatedly lost money over the years, including a loss of over half a million during the 2005 season.

The news means the loss of 40 permanent jobs and the largest teenage employer in the city. The board, which voted unanimously to close the park, now has to decide what to do with Libertyland's rides, including the Zippin Pippin roller coaster that has been in operation since 1915.

Sad to see another park go down under... and an old roller coaster that will most likely be destroyed.

Zippin Pippin I heard was Elvis' favorite coaster ever. Let's hope at least that gets relocated.

WOW! What a shocker to me. I didn't know that this park was in financial trouble. I've always wanted to visit because it wasn't too far from my grandparents house. Guess that'll never happen now will it.

These little parks are just getting hit hard these days.

Very sad to see another one go.

Sad, and a bit frustrating. I stopped at the park last year in my cross country drive, and the one day I stopped there (july 4th of all days) they had to close the park because of a power outage. So I didn't get to experience it.

Now it looks like I won't. Hopefully they'll decide to somehow save the rides, but I'm not to optimistic. Especially since they did this in a way that didn't allow the public to even contribute to the conversation until it was to late.

Another park destined for doom.

I've always wanted to visit this park, I'm terribly sad I will never get to... :(

It seems like great wooden coasters in the South aren't doing so well. :(
