News: Final investigation on Playland death released

Posted at 1:29 AM EST (0629 GMT)

Nov. 11th, 2005 -- After three months of investigation, police have published a report on the death of seven-year-old John Kelly Cassara, who died while riding Playland Park's Ye Old Mill ride. The report concluded that Cassara was killed by blunt head trauma and not from drowning, and that the death was accidental. Based on reports from three girls who saw Cassara climb out of the boat and up onto a catwalk, police believe he fell off the catwalk and struck his head.

The report didn't completely let Playland off the hook. Police found problems in the park's lack of proper training for ride operators, a lack of staff, and problems communicating with authorities. However police say that Playland's problems did not factor in to Cassara's death.

Well, at least there is some self responsibility being placed on the victim instead of all on the park. While I do feel for the families loss, I hope they do not make it difficult and find any other persuit in legal matters towards the park. Close the case.

The family is still planning to sue. According to the source article, the family is quoted as saying, "The family is now certain that litigation is required to retain the truth in this horrible tragedy."

As far as I'm concerned, the blame is with the parents. You do not just send a seven-year-old boy on a water ride by himself where his parents can't supervise him. A kiddie flat I can understand, but not a ride like this.

I totally agree with you Aaron. It's tragic, but I place a lot more blame on the parents and their lack of supervision than I place on the park. As a parent, I would never allow my kids to ride somethign like that without me riding along with them. Still don't, even with them being aged 9 and 10. They've got a few years let before I'll let them get away from me. I just don't understand parents who allow that.

I see it all the time at Rhino Rally too, and it just boggles me. We've got an minimum age to ride without a parent, but I don't think it's high enough. We get some that really push it on riding alone.
