News: World's largest Flying Coaster - Tatsu, to debut Spring 2006

Posted at 3:34 AM EST (0834 GMT)

Nov. 17th, 2005 -- For its 35th anniversary, Six Flags Magic Mountain in Valencia, CA, will introduce its 17th rollercoaster -- the tallest, fastest and longest Flying rollercoaster in the world -- which is slated for a Spring 2006 debut.

Dubbed Tatsu -- Japanese for "dragon" -- the 170-foot-tall coaster will strap riders in a prone position and send them soaring over a mountainous terrain at speeds of 62 mph along 3,602 feet of steel track. Riders will experience a 124-foot-tall "inverted pretzel loop" as part of the three-minute-long ride.

"We are the thrill park, and we are known for coasters," said Sue Carpenter, Magic Mountain's spokeswoman. The roller coaster, designed by Switzerland-based Bolliger & Mabillard, is among the "largest capital investments in recent years" at the park, she said.

Tatsu rollercoaster specifications:

Speed: 62 mph

Height: 170 feet

Elevation change: 263 feet

Track length: 3,602 feet

First drop: 111 feet

Inversions: 4

124-foot pretzel loop

103-foot flat spin

96-foot-tall zero-gravity roll

360-degree in-line roll (over the Revolution coaster)

Ride time: 3 1/2 minutes

Other: Dual loading platform for simulataneous boarding of two trains.

Capacity: 1,600 riders per hour

Oh man, this is so exciting. I can't wait to get back to SFMM. I've never ridden a B&M flying coaster, and if this is my first, that'd be just awesome.

How many inversions does this have? Five? That's insane!

The PR says it has "4" so im guessing it has 4 inversions....

But really only ONE inverts you... As the zero g roll is a sideways roll... You wont be upsidedown at all. In fact... you will be more "inverted" going down the first drop then you will in "3" of the ""4"" inversions.

It looks like it's going to be a great layout- maybe the first flyer that is actually going to let you do some interacting with what's around and let you feel like you're flying. Hopefully they'll get the skytower opened up this year to go along with it. That would really make it a nice double treat.

This sounds like a great coaster for them. I love the idea of having fly over Revolution.

Until now, there were already 16 reasons why I want to go to Magic Mountain; now Tatsu makes 17 reasons! Magic Mountain continues to impress me with their coaster collection. This is great reminder that 2006 will be the best season in years in the industry. Surely Tatsu will make us all proud.

There are renderings on sixflags' official site, but I had to fish around that site for a couple of minutes to find a good video. The Pretzel Loop will have some amazing head choppers (with the surrounding trees)

This is so much better than "flying" over a parking lot.

Awesome. This coaster is huge. B&M finallt got a great looking flyer. I really hope to be able to ride it in the near future.

This actually looks more-then-decent. It seems very disorienting.

What a great roller coaster Tatsu is! Six Flags couldn't improve it's other parks, but it's certainly improving SFMM!

Excellent. Makes my not being able to spend Christmas Eve at the park until next year WELL worth the wait.

OMG, an original name! I didn't think Six Flags had it in them.

I may have to save up some money and head out there next summer.

#17 looks to be a winner. I am just RELIEVED/GLAD it does not have any "lie to fly" or "fly to lie" turns. It looks as if the ride stays in the "flying" position majority of the time - which is what most flyers need to do! With the Vekoma Flying Dutchmen I've ridden, all I experienced was brief moments of looking at the flat barren dirt below me and the rest was spend facing up at the sky. NOT THAT GREAT. X-Flight and Stealth (now Borg) also had extremely uncomfortable seating/harnesses. I'm glad SFMM went with B&M.

Excellent, my home park once again delivers what promises to be a great ride. It's probably the most original name out of all the coasters there. Looks like this will be a nice, long ride too. I can't wait.
