News: Paramount Parks for Sale?

Posted at 7:19 PM EST (0019 GMT)

Jan. 4th, 2006 -- While speaking to a group of shareholders overseas in mid-December, Viacom CEO Sumner Redstone hinted that should the right price be offered, they would likely sell the company's theme park and publishing devisions. Although both assets are profitable, Redstone and others in the company do not see the growth potential they'd like from either the Paramount Parks or Simon & Schuster publishing divisions.

Analysts are skeptical that any buyers would surface. The proposed sale of Six Flags earlier in the year was unsuccessful and many feel any efforts to move Paramount Parks would be met with similar results.

I could see the Paramount parks selling before the SF parks...Paramount has a much lower debt threshold to take on.

Unless, the profit margin is enormous beyond belief, I can't see someone taking on the huge purchase of the park chain. Selling a park or being divided up could be more likely. Although I don't really see that happening either.

It's happened before, actually with this chain of parks. This is going to happen. Being "reclassified" or put into a "discount group" within Viacom doesn't mean the parks aren't going to be sold. It sounds like preparation for a sale to me. Did I mention this back in August? Sounds familiar.

It may take a while to find a buyer (maybe years), but it's not impossible.
