News: Long-dormant Islands of Adventure ride may open

Posted at 4:13 PM EST (2113 GMT)

Feb. 12th, 2006 -- Sylvester McMonkey McBean's Very Unusual Driving Machines at Islands of Adventure, which has never opened, may come to life in 2006.

The Dr. Seuss-themed family monorail ride has stood silently since the park opened in 1999. The ride sits 15 feet above the midways on the Seuss Landing section of the park.

It offers views of the lake as it skirts through tunnels and over the midways.

It may get some changes and a new name this season if it opens. A sign even declares the ride as "Coming Summer 2006," though similar signs were placed from 199 to 2003 with no operating results.

Past problems reportedly were a lack of evacuation if a vehicle stopped above a midway. There is no walkway along the track.

The ride was originally supposed to allow guests to control the speed of the vehicles, even letting them stop and bump into other guests.

Steven Smith, a former Universal employee said the ride design may change as well as the name.

This would really be cool. The capacity seems like it will be atrocious though.

Did they not think of an emergency evacuation when building the ride? I guess there would be no other way then walkways along the track, but then that would take away from it...maybe that is why they didn't put them on.

Well, I have an alternatve to catwalks, and if I could think of it, surley engeneers could think of something. You make a self powered emergency type vehicle that you can put on the track, to drive out, and push the cars back around in the same way they use machines to push shopping carts at Wal-Mart. Apparently the cars were originally being made to bump into eachother, so why couldn't they push eachother? I always wondered what the deal was with that track. They had the Fix-it-up Chappy guy or someone driving around on one little track, and as dumb as it was, I thought maybe that was all it was supposed to be. although it did look like there was another track that was vacant, I never had time to look and figure it out. I knew there was supposed to be a ride there! :)

This is going to be a whole new ride, different from what there was before. It's cool walking by and seeing half the track and electrical lines ripped up.
