News: Special need? Prove it

Posted at 1:32 AM EST (0632 GMT)

Feb. 10th, 2004 -- After abuse of the "special assistance passes" guests with disabilities use to prevent standing in long lines, Disneyland has made it a little tougher to get them. Guests would claim they have bad backs or one person out of a group would rent a wheelchair to take advantage of the system.

The abuse resulted in crowds of people waiting where only a few would normally be.

Disney is now asking more questions to verify if a guest is eligible for the pass or not.

For more information, see The Sacramento Bee.

Now if they could allow Segways in the park for the disabled, we'll be alright.

At Cedar Point, we never had this problem, because they have to not only have the passbook, but they also have to have a piece of paper which says what they can/cannot ride, how they can board/etc.

*shrugs* I think I read something about this over on RRC, and it also has to do with guests with mental disabilities not getting passes, which *isn't* cool. Mentally disabled children aren't as capable of waiting as others.

GOOD. all parks need to start doing this. I am so sick of phonies getting wheel chairs and taking my ride in the front seat without waiting after I waited for an hour.

My sister and friend did this at USF once, I was ashamed to call her family after that.

Good job Disney! It sucks that people would exploit a system that’s in place for people who need it. I never knew it was possible to do this. I just assumed you needed some kind of proof that you were disabled.

I like this, but I'm worried about complaints they could get.

I saw one kid that had a duct tape cast on his leg and they let him cut in line.

I can see this stance being adopted by many more parks around the country in coming years. People are figuring out how to exploit the system, and parks know about it, too.

Too many people are abusing the system, so I think all the parks will go to a system similar to CP, where disabled people have to wait the same amount of time that people in the que are waiting. They just stamp your card when you can come back and get on the ride.
