News: Preservationists work to save Lake Compounce historical home

Posted at 8:52 AM EST (1352 GMT)

Feb. 15th, 2006 -- The general manager of Lake Compunce says that the park has no space or use for the founder's house, and with all of the park land designated for future development that it intends to put up a needed maintenance building where the house now stands.

But preservationistsare trying to save the 200-year-old Gad Norton house, a two-story Colonial farmhouse, are seeking out support from senators, representatives, the state attorney general and raising awareness of the issue.

They have a March 13 deadline to reach an alternative solution under the city's delay of demolition ordinance. The park has offered the local historical society $15,000 to take the house off of the property -- slightly more than the nation's oldest amusement park would have to pay to have it torn down. But that is still far less than it would cost to move it according to local preservationists James Calciano and Ken Karl, who have previously moved historic homes.

That is really sad that the park sees no value in their history.

It's not necessarily that they don't see value, but that they desparately need the space that it occupies for other things. I don't know if they're making any use of the house right now or not. At least they're willing to let it be moved, and putting up a little more money for it. But if the preservationists want to save it, I have a feeling they're going to have to come up with a lot more money and get it moved.

The house is not being used and is poor condition. Major work would be needed to get the structure to code.

The preservationists have been fast to put pressure on LC to save it and slow to do anything on thier end to move the house.

Well codes for a private structure are not as rough as for a public one. I don't think codes will be a problem if they intend to keep the structure residential. Whatever they do with it, I'm glad the park does want to give it a chance for survival rather than knock it down and say nothing.
