News: 75 stranded on Busch Gardens ride

Posted at 4:23 AM EST (0923 GMT)

Feb. 20th, 2006 -- Skyride at Busch Gardens Tampa stopped and stranded 75 riders for two hours Saturday night.

The ride malfunctioned at 7:15 p.m. Saturday, and the park closed at 7:30 p.m.

The ride reopened Sunday afternoon after maintenance workers inspected and tested it. Park officials did not know why the ride malfunctioned and stopped operating.

No problems were detected, but a gondola was removed from the ride, a park spokesman said.

Why would it take two hours for the ride to resume motion after a car derailed? How off the track did it come anyway? I have not heard of such a thing, but I know that there was a time when many many sky rides were shut down and removed, but I have not heard why. I assume there was some great tragedy. Does anyone know anything about it?

Skyride stoppages are not unusual. I've seen this one stop several times a day- but that's often for loading up disabled guests or other things that may have to take longer to load or unload.

A 2 hour stoppage is a bit unusual though, though not completely unheard of. I know that other parks have had similar problems.

It happened at Cedar Point, when I was working up there. I and my crew are in the Guest Services office, and get so used to seeing the cars moving. My friend Catie said in confusion, "Um... does the SkyRide always stop like that?"

LOL. Nope, it derailed. Nothing major. It was kinda funny, cuz people were peeking their heads out of the cars trying to see what was going on.

Yeah, so like Sir Willow said. Its being stopped for 2 hours seems a bit long, but it's not unheard of.

No car derailed here, they just removed a gondola, i guess maybe one of the wheels messed up on the gondola. It doesnt seem like anything happened, they would have said so if somebody got injured.
