News: Drop Tower approved for Santa Cruz

Posted at 1:11 PM EST (1811 GMT)

Feb. 11th, 2004 -- Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk in California received approval for a new 125-foot drop tower from the city's planning board yesterday. Some locals still oppose the tower, saying it will ruin their view of the ocean.

However, this tower is narrower and shorter than previous proposals that have been shot down by the local government. The tower will sit 60 feet taller than Giant Dipper, currently the tallest structure in the oceanside amusement park.  The Seaside Company agreed to paint the tower white to help it blend in more. The have also agreed not to put lights on the tower. Instead, the will light it from below, and turn the lights off when the park closes for the night.

I can't believe people said it will ruin their view of the ocean. Uh. Can't you see around it?

Glad to hear that this park is doing some new investing.
