News: Flight of Fear flies the coop at PKD

Posted at 9:14 PM EST (0214 GMT)

Apr. 1st, 2006 -- Unfortunately not an April Fool's joke and to the dismay of coaster afficianados, Paramount's Kings Dominion has quietly extinguished the "Flight of Fear" (formerly "The Outer Limits Flight of Fear") rollercoaster for the 2006 season...just shy of its tenth season in operation.

Guests visiting the park for PKD's opening weekend, hoping to ride the linear-induction launch coaster, were greeted with a large black fence closing off the themed area that welcomed riders with a faux military-base motif.

There was no official mention of the closure previous to the park's opening this weekend. According to a staffer stationed at the park's "Anaconda" rollercoaster, workers were informed of the closure just a few weekends ago and were told that it "might be moved to another park." "We really couldn't believe it."

The "Flight of Fear" ride, building, and themed area sit intact but "will not be operating for the 2006 season", according to PKD's Guest Relations office. The anonomous worker at the "Anaconda" stated the general believe if enough guests complain, the park will have no choice but to reopen it.

The "Flight of Fear" has been removed from park maps and the park website and leaves the park with 10 rollercoaster-type rides...which would have been 11 with this season's addition of "The Italian Job Turbo Coaster" opening later this spring.

An identical ride at Paramount's Kings Island is scheduled to open with the park on April 14th.

This sucks. FOF needs to stay there so PKD can still be the launch coaster capital.

It's going to Canada's Wonderland. This is an OLD story.

It has been under a lot of speculation as to what is happening with this ride, but where has it been said that it is going to PCW? Don't just toss something out there to look like a know it all and not explain yourself please. It gives off a snooty vibe.

I think this is as good time as any to point out the guest complaint procedures. The more people that go to guest relations and complain about tne closure of the ride, the better. I will visit PKD once this season, to get my IJSC credit and that is it.

I've heard that both models will be moved.

The PKD version will go to Canada and the PKI version will go to Carowinds. woohoo! I hope so, I love this ride!

The Paramount version of the Six Flags ride rotation program I see? This bites for the possibility of both leaving. The darkness just adds to the fun of being in steel insanity. It sucks to have such abandonment this year.

I suspect (if this is even true) that they will put the MTV Shockwave coaster in the same building that housed FOF.

I could be wrong, but the survey had it on there about 2 years ago, and this seems to fit all too well.

Back in early Dec. I had mentioned on another forum and TN that a friend of mine had made the trip to PKD to bid on FoF's relocation (to PCW). Of course, everyone thought I was full of you know what but I knew the truth would eventually come out. I suppose it may be re-themed, we'll see. The plan also included PKI's to come to Carowinds, but that is not certain yet.

Zingo, I think you read my post as snooty. It was not. If I say the sky is blue, I shouldn't have to explain why. Just look up. It's been in other forums for about a month. Plus there have been rumors for a few years. Contact Michael Sanfellipo at PKD if you need references. I remember WildMouse's post.

At least PKI's version is still up & running... but I don't live close enough to Cincinnatti to enjoy it.

It's a very enjoyable ride, and the backstory only helps. Sadly, if worse comes to worse, I should hope that it's just closed in order to retheme for the MTV Soundwave idea.

FoF is my favorite coaster at PKI, and in my top five...god it can't leave, retheme it and that's all I need. Of course if I ever ride a rocket coaster this could all change.

The PKD version must stay! I don't really give a hoot about PKI's, but I live right near PKD, it has to be there!

It is no longer listed on PKD's site, but it is still on PKI's site.
