Apr. 5th, 2006 --
After a long wait of four months, coaster enthusiasts and families got to go and have great time at Six Flags Great Adventure as it re-opened for the 2006 season and Six Flags' 45th anniversary.
The usual rides were open, except the water rides. It's still cold here in Jersey. Most coasters ran smoothly, and the park wasn't too crowded.
The interaction from the workers to park guests showed a major difference since the 2005 season. In line for Kingda Ka, for example, when the ride broke down, which I will get to later, the ride operators would go back and forth through the line and ask, "Everyone good? Everyone OK?" Also, the popular rides had DJs! To my surprise, there was a DJ at Kingda Ka, which I've never seen before.
Although I was happy Friday night, after riding Nitro and Kingda Ka, I must say I was disappointed in how well Kingda Ka operated.
Here's what happened: I get in line, and the line was very short. Within 10 minutes I was in the station. Finally I'm next. I sit down in the orange train and pull down my restraint. The operators check them on each person, everyone fits, everyone is locked in. So why don't we go? Ten minutes later, we have to get off and get back in line, but we are still next. Roughly 30 minutes later, I sit down again and what happens? I get up again after being restrained in my seat for another 10 minutes. The ride operators decide to launch the other half of the station, which did not make our side happy. Everyone booed, as if it were a simultaneous roar. After those two launches, that side is done. Finally, after an hour and a test run, I sit down and go on the third launch of Kingda Ka's orange train for 2006. According to ThrillNetwork.com's coasterdude28, he was on the other side of the station, and they closed that side. He waited four hours and never got on, a lot worse than my story. Nitro's line was smooth and quick. I waited in the maze and got on in less than an hour. The DJ was funny and helped pass time.
Bug's Bunny National Park looks like a nifty little place. It seems like a great place for families, and Great Adventure has certainly gone all out for families. Now they have all the Looney Tunes walking around greeting families, and they sell Bugs Bunny Balloons all over. El Toro looks like an incredible coaster.
Sunday was also relatively empty. I got on Medusa and Kingda Ka within three hours. Kingda Ka ran very smoothly; not a single break down while I was there. However, my friends told me that before I got there, it was broken down for more than an hour, and the people in line said they had already left the line once that day. Medusa was fun, a good way to break four months with no inversions.
Overall I give Great Adventure an 8 out of 10 for opening weekend, just because of Kingda Ka's breakdowns.
