News: Hong Kong Disneyland performers seeking improved conditions

Posted at 3:27 PM EDT (1927 GMT)

Apr. 10th, 2006 -- Complaining that they are overworked and underpaid, the character performers at Hong Kong Disneyland are asking park management to increase pay and provide better injury policies. The performers, who don the role of characters during meet-and-greets and parades, are seeking the same pay as stage performers, who make $258 more a month then the other character performers with monthly salaries of $1,160.

The theme park's staff union is also seeking to reduce the employees' workload, saying that over 30 character performers have suffered work-related injuries and that the two sick days a month are insufficient. The union also called attention to the performers' 12-hour workdays.

See the Washington Times for more.

This is very interesting...... maybe a cultural difference? Cast Members at HKDL get MANY more sick hours than most Americans do.
