News: Woman dies after riding Mission Space

Posted at 11:59 PM EDT (0359 GMT)

Apr. 12th, 2006 -- On Wednesday, Walt Disney World's Mission:Space ride claimed another death in less than a year. A 49-year-old woman from Germany died, but Disney claims that the woman had suffered from high blood pressure and other health related problems. According to a statement released late Wednesday, the woman died at Florida Hospital Celebration Health after she was taken there Tuesday because of the sickness she received from the mock space flight at Epcot. "We learned today that her condition had become very serious, and this evening we were notified she passed away," the statement said.

The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services stated that the park said that the woman had come off the ride and was feeling dizzy, nauseated and not feeling well. After the incident, the ride was shut down immediately, even though Disney officials reported it had been operating normally. Disney did not release the German tourist's identity or other details about the incident.

When the ride opened in August 2003, concerns about the safety of the four-minute ride were raised. In June 2005, safety concerns where renewed after the death of 4-year-old Daudi Bamuwamye collapsed while riding with his mother and sister. An autopsy later showed that the child died from unrelated causes to the ride, which included a rare, undiagnosed heart disease.

No timeframe was given for when the ride could re-open, but it was noted that a report on the status of the ride would not be available until at least Thursday.

It's very unfortunate that this happened to another person...In the thread that was closed, I understood where Andrew was coming when he said that most people don't go get a check up before they go to an amusement park, but you have to keep in mind, if you have heart disease or some other problem, you should know...if not you'll be in serious trouble. Disney and every other amusment park across the entire world doesn't put warning signs at the entrance of rides for nothing, and when it says you shouldn't ride if you have high blood pressure like in this case, you shouldn't ride. I understand some are unaware that something like this could happen, but theres a difference between not knowing and being ignorant of cautions. I'm not saying that this woman was being ignorant to the warnings, but sometimes things happen because they fail to read the warning signs before riding rides. Bottom line, if you know you have high blood pressure, heart disease or any other health disorder that could be lethal when mixed with a ride like this, STAY AWAY FROM RIDING IT.

What does this ride to to its passengers that it raises concerns and has the ability to cause something like this? This is very unfortunate.

^ I'm not entirely sure, but a while ago, TN's news said a study was conducted on Expedition GeForce and some people who rode it had a heart rate of about 220 a minute, which can be lethal for a person with a heart condition. Maybe that was what happened to her. But I'm no medical expert, I'm just guessing here.

You know they did a study of heart rates on roller coasters with ACE members. I cant remmeber the guys name but he had been on well over 300 roller coasters and even when he rode Millenium Force, his heart rate was off the charts. Now this is an avid rider like myself. If roller coasters incxrease your heart rate for experienced riders, imagine what it does for inexperienced riders. Bottom line if you have a heart problem or any other health issue, stay off the ride. No excitement in the world is worth your life.

If what I've read was reported correctly, the G-forces on this are about the level of your typical scrambler ride. So why aren't people dropping dead and suffering physical problems on that? I believe the problem is that people who would never go to a small park and ride a scrambler go to Disney and get on this because it's "the happy place" and they believe nothing could happen to them there. While waiting in line they start to have second thoughts due to all the disney hype and get themselves worked up into an extreme state of stress which is very dangerous to start with before the ride even begins. Even a mildly physical ride is dangerous under those conditions. I don't know how many times people have tried to convince me that Space Mountain is the most extreme, frightening ride ever built because Disney says so. Actually for them it is because they wouldn't go on a kiddie coaster if they were at any other park. Space Mountain is nothing but a Jet City type coaster in the dark, a relatively mild ride, but add a heart condition and high stress over what you've heard about it and you have the possibility for lethal consequences.

Just like when I would go in a Haunted House at the age of 6 or 7 and just waiting in line would freak me out so much that when I actually got inside I would jump at the cheesiest moments.

^No.

I'll watch the news tonight and get you guys some more info. The reporters down here will be all over the story since it has to do with Disney failing.

Uh if by scrambler you mean more like a Wisdom Sizzler than yea, but even that ride has had its own share of problems :)

But the G-forces of this ride still don't beat walking down stairs ;-)

The story says it was a German tourist. If thats true then there's always the chance she did not speak english, and therefor couldnt read the safety/warning signs at the entrance. I believe they have them in Spanish, but i wouldnt guess that they had it in German.

^However, there are Disney Guidemaps that are printed in German and available throughout the parks that also include these warnings. If she had a translation device, then the warning given in the pre-show would have also been translated into German through that device.

I can't see why anybody, even tourists would ride if they knew what the ride was. I wouldn't until I'd seen what it's like. And on a second note, there are 13 places where "warning signs" are posted.

The warning signs are true, but how many of yall actually read them? I know I hardly don't. Anyways. Its said that she passed a way. I am not saying the signs are bad, people just don't pay attention.

It's impossible to not read or pay attention to the warning signs on Mission Space, unless you don't speak english (which is possible with the german lady) or can't read yet. They're everywhere. And they mention who shouldn't ride in the pre-show. I rode it in 2003 and there weren't so many. I'm guessing that because of complaints they added some because in 2004 we felt like they were trying to talk us out of riding.

You'll get 2 gs on scramblers that are running at top speed (11.4 revolutions per minute) and that's the way most carnivals run them, although some major parks don't run them that fast. Does anyone know if the newspaper reports on Mission Space running at 2 gs is correct, or does it actually have a higher g rate?
