News: Libertyland set to auction off rides

Posted at 3:13 PM EDT (1913 GMT)

Apr. 24th, 2006 -- Potential ride buyers will have a chance not only to buy Libertyland's carousel, but the park's other rides as well. Libertyland, which closed last year due to financial problems, will auction off more than 20 rides on June 21.

One of the most interesting offerings is the Zippin Pippin wooden roller coaster, constructed in 1915 and billed as Elvis Presley's favorite. Graceland says it has no intention to bid on the ride. Other notable pieces include the park's Grand Carousel, which is expected to fetch as much as $1 million, and the double-corkscrew Revolution steel coaster.

The amusement park does not have expectations on the number of bidders or the cost of the items, but expects plenty of interest from buyers both in the Memphis area and elsewhere.

If Zippin' Pippin was Elvis's favorite roller coaster, you'd think there would be an attempt to save it.

I would hope someone would save ZP since it has the history with Elvis and everything.

I just hate to see another park I'll never get to visit.

Tennessee is down to one park now. :(

There IS an effort being made to save the park - or at the very least the antique carousel and the Zippin Pippin. Among the interesting entanglements is that the city of Memphis actually owns the rides, NOT the Mid-South Fair which runs Libertyland, so the auction is not authorized by the owners of the property!

One of the owners of the T-Rex Group, which owns Magic Springs in Hot Springs, Arkansas, is meeting with the Memphis City council next week to discuss their offer to lease/buy Libertyland and the Memphis Colisuem.
