News: Universal Studios Florida raises minimum wage

Posted at 9:20 PM EDT (0120 GMT)

Apr. 27th, 2006 -- In an effort to keep up with competitors SeaWorld and Walt Disney World, Universal Florida has announced that it will be increasing its minimum wage to $7.25 starting May 7.

Recently SeaWorld raised its minimum to $7 an hour and Disney raised its to $6.90.

Not only is Universal offering a pay raise, it is also offering various benefits ranging from dental, medical and life insurances to a 401(k) retirement savings plan effective immediately for new hires. Normally employees had to work three months to earn these benefits.

Universal is also offering a 25-cent increase on top of the minimum to anyone with at least two years experience in tourism or hospitality.

Thats awesome news. I hope Carowinds new owners raise theirs as well. Paramount was pretty cheap.

How much did you get at Carowinds?
When I worked at PCW we got:
$7.25/hr for ride attendants
$8.00/he for ride operators
$8.25/hr for ride leads

But now minimum wage in Ontario has risen so I know for sure it's:
$8.25/hr for ride operators
$8.75/hr for ride leads

Supes get somewhere around $9 and a couple bucks per month for in park food.

Am I alone here in thinking that with the very high prices charged to get into parks like these, they should be able to afford to pay their staff better?

Now that you mention it, it seems the parks like Universal or Disney that cost lots of money for admission pay their employees less. But parks like Paramount or Cedar Fair cost less in admission, and pay their employees a bit more.

I don't know if this is a factor or not but consider that your average Disney park is 2 to 3 times the size of a Paramount park.

That's a whole lot more staff they have to pay. And only on about $10 extra per ticket bought.

Some of you guys are saying that your park has higher pay. Well, just remember that this $7.25 is just for the janitor jobs and stuff. Ride ops and attendents get paid a but more.

The problem is, there are still tons of job oppurtunities in Orlando that pay better than this. Its hard to hold on to people in their 20s if they can go right down the street and make $10 an hour.
