Posted at 6:16 PM EDT (2216 GMT) May. 8th, 2006 -- Cedar Point's newest ride, Skyhawk, experienced a mechanical problem and was shut down after operating for only one day.
Skyhawk, a Screamin' Swing ride built by S&S Power of Logan, Utah, is a giant swing ride. Riders swing 125 feet above the midway at 65 mph on the new ride. Park officials did not specify what happened with the ride, nor did they say if it would be working again today. For more information, visit nbc4i.com. Visit Skyhawk's official Web page here. I think it's because CP wasn't as prepared on opening day as they usually. A lot of the rides were having problems. Magnum, Mantis, Millennium, Wicked Twister, Mean Streak, and Gemini all had problems at some point in time Saturday and Sunday.

I really doubt any of the rides going down has anything to do with how prepared Cedar Point was for opening weekend. There is no direct correlation between the two. The park was getting ready for the season weeks ahead of May 6, testing rides and everything. It's probably just a stroke of bad luck, and the rides "breaking in" after not operating for the entire off-season.

Kennywood's swing hasn't broken down or had any significant down time. YET.

I wouldn't worry much about other rides having some small problems. My homepark SFGAm had some very minor closures on Superman, Raging Bull and Whizzer, just that I know of. All were very sort with Whizzer maybe lasting 20 minutes and being the longest. It happens anytime of the year so lets not freak out just yet.
As for SkyHawk, we'll see what happens. It's a new ride and so on and so on. I'm not going to worry until it's been closed for some amount of time or an announcement that it will be closed for a while.

Dorney's was at least testing on Saturday. I am not sure if it has even opened yet. I didn't pay too much attention. It looked VERY impressive, but I am just a coaster guy. I'll leave those crazy rides to the rest of you!

Interesting looking at it's webcam. I haven't seen them run the ride in the 15-20 minutes I've been looking at it off and on, but there are certainly people in the queue and several others sitting around it looking at it. Looks like some of those people have been in line for a little while now, so I would guess that it's been operating at least some today. I have also seen several people walking around in the ride area itself.
edit: and now that I've said that, they just loaded it up and sent it on it's way. So it's operating again. Not a very long delay.
