News: Wonderland Sydney to close in April

Posted at 5:20 PM EST (2220 GMT)

Feb. 16th, 2004 -- Right around the time Sydney, Australia will see the return of an amusement park, it will lose another. Wonderland Sydney, which has been operating since December of 1985, will close for good on April 26th, 2004.

Leisure Theme Parks Sunway Group, which has managed the park since 1997, blames the drop in attendance on everyone except themselves. They blame everything from 9/11 to SARS and from Australian bushfires to the collapse of a major insurance company.

Wonderland Sydney is home to a Vekoma Boomerang, an in-house built wooden coaster and a family wooden coaster.

Sydney will see the return of Luna Park in April, which will open just before Wonderland Sydney will close.

You've got to understand how much this park relied on the Asian tourist market. You don't see it in America, but the closest there is Orlando's Brittish situation. That town would be dead except for the US holiday periods if it weren't for the English. Now bring that situation to Australia. The Asian tourists simply aren't coming anymore. It's no Six Flags-style weather excuse. It's the hard reality.

The park is owned by a Malaysian company who have refused time and time again to give Wonderland a budget for new rides, so the regional market has always been a tough one for them.

The park's management shouldn't be accused of finding excuses. The closure wasn't their decision, it was made by the parent company, who want to sell off the land for industrial developments. Which I hate to break it is a lot more lucrative than any theme park ever is.

That sucks, but I guess business is business. I wonder what will happen to the rides?
