News: 18 people injured in accident on Wild Thing

Posted at 7:28 PM EDT (2328 GMT)

May. 21st, 2006 -- Eighteen people suffered minor injuries in an accident aboard the Wild Thing roller coaster at the Valleyfair! amusement park this Sunday, authorities and park officials said.

Fourteen people were taken to St. Francis Regional Medical Center in Shakopee, while four refused medical attention, officials said.

The rear car on one of the roller coaster's coaches separated from the others about 4:25 p.m. at a point where the trains slow down as they enter the ride station, Valleyfair spokesman Bill Von Bank said. The Wild Thing reaches speeds of up to 74 mph, but it would have been braking and going much slower at that point, he said.

The car came to a stop on a tilted angle along the track. Park officials had the car covered with an orange tarp.

Bailey Merchant, 12, of Shakopee, said she was in the rear car when the middle car of the three on the train started jerking and smoking. She said the middle car then "fell right off the track
and made the last car turn over."

Katelyn Churchich, 16, of Oakdale, said she was in the middle car when it happened.

"It started jerking and moving around, like, not right," she said. "We kind of heard scratching and we didn't know anything was wrong until we smelled metal grinding with each other, and then
when we looked back one of the cars was tilted on its side."

People were screaming, crying, jumping out and running away, she said.

The Wild Thing has been in operation for a decade and this is the first incident where riders were injured, or where the roller coaster encountered a malfunction on such a magnitute.  The park said maintenance officials were initially investigating the accident, but that it was too early to determine why the car separated from the others.  The park will be contacting testing companies, the ride manufacturer and independent consultants as it investigates.

Holy crap!
I was there today, but left the park at 3pm before it happened.
Having ridden the Wild Thing numerous times in the back car today is very freaky!

I certainly wonder what is going to happen to Morgan's other hypers, since this is the second sort of incident on one of their coasters (Steel Dragon being the other of course)

Why didn't you report it if you thought it was freaky? The thing is, even if it seemed much rougher than normal, it should be reported.

At Mich. Adventure and Cedar Point, when guests have reported abnormal rides (for rough rides, problem lapbars, etc), I have had to go on test rides to verify it. If confirmed, we can do something about it without putting guests in harm's way.

I think he meant that it was freaky to think that he could have been on the train when it happened because he had been riding it earlier.

I know people don't like speculation..but 2 questions based on the pictures in the link...
1 - Where is the rest of the train? (It looks like there is only one car in that picture)

2 - Why the heck is that car tilted all sideways like that? Upstops come off?

Anways, glad to see it looks like everyone will be okay. Hopefully we can get this problem figured out, and the anti-coaster people don't eat this incident up.

To answer your questions...

1-The train cars seperated from each other, and

2-The car did come to a rest on it's side.

It's all in the article if you read it...

Well how the heck can the car end up on it's side unless the upstops failed?

with both axles locked there shouldn't be any way for it to tip over that I can see....unless you count the car's ability to bank through a curve as the cause.

I am wondering if the car body came off the wheel assymble base or did the last car come unhitched from the rest of the train and lets say the pivot pin falls and jams in the track which would derail the car. The pics are from far and hard to see but it looks like just the car body is sitting sideways and you can see track underneath. Weird.
The lastest info says that 18 were injured.

NEW News, report from a passenger tells of smoke and stuff as the car came undone. http://www.kare11.com/news/ts_articl...?storyid=125295

That is not the first time Wild Thing had a malfunction. A few years ago the chain broke on the lifthill. I have a feeling that CF is getting POed at Morgan and will want to replace WT with a B&M hyper.

Give me a break. Mamba runs fine and hasn't had any serious accidents like this. Morgans are DEFINATELY more reliable than Intamin. You can't seriously say that Wild Thing breaks down more than TTD can you?

^We're getting off topic here, but that is like comparing Apples and Oranges. If you want to compare Morgan and Intamin, compare things like WT and S:RoS (hyper w/ chain lift hill vs. hyper w/ chain lift hill, not chain lift vs. 120 mph launch).

Anways, who knows if we'll ever get a true answer as to what happened...sometimes parks are rather quiet about it.

I know but he was saying how CF must be Pissed off at Morgan. I'm saying CF , because they are the ones that have TTD that's what I'm talking about. In this case Intamin has caused CF more problems than Morgan. Maybe it's age. Maybe Morgans only have a 10-15 year life span while arrows are 20-25 years or so. Hmmmmm....

I have never heard of this happening on a hyper before.

I guess we can be grateful it happened near the end and not at full speed.

*Shakes head at some of the comments*

At this point no one knows why it happened. But to make comments that Morgans are unsafe or only have a certain lifespan is especially ignorant at this point in the game. The only other Morgan coaster that had a problem, Steel Dragon, numerous sources have said that it was because of the shoddy maintanance on the coaster and that is one reason they've been so hesitant to say what their investigation revealed.

Chain breaks happen on a huge variety of coasters from all manufacturers if the parks don't get the chains repaired in time. This is drastically different.

I'd love to know what happened that completely ripped away the wheel assemblies on the last car, as well as apparently doing so also on the next to last car, and what caused them to separate. It'll be interesting to see what it was that could cause such an unusual, catastropic failure like this. They're very blessed that it happened at the end brake run and not during some other part of the ride where the car could have possibly fallen and the whole thing would have been far more serious.

More photos to look at.
Looks like the 5th car lost a set of wheels and the 6th car is missing its wheels and is on its side.

Steel Force is NOT closed from this. It was closed a couple of weeks ago because they had to replace the chain on the lift hill. It has absolutely nothing to do with this accident.

This really sucks. although there is good in this. People giving themselves another reason not to ride coasters... shorter lines.. >=D.

I'm still confused, how did the car get tilted like that.. what exactly happend?
