News: Six year old falls from fair Ferris Wheel

Posted at 8:33 AM EDT (1233 GMT)

Jun. 20th, 2006 -- A six year old boy plunged to his death from the top of a Ferris wheel Sunday afternoon in Stockton, CA.

Officials were told that the boy tried to climb out of his seat.  It was not clear if the boy was secured in the seat properly or not.

The fair does not have age restrictions only height restrictions which the child met.

"We are extremely sorry this tragic accident occurred," said Butler Amusements spokeswoman Mary Castel. The Ferris wheel will remain closed until the investigation is complete.

Coaserdude, the story doesn't actually say. I looked but there isn't anything.

I'm assuming it was a traveling model, which normally would be an open car.

There was a local newsreport on this and there are a few more details to add as the mother was interviewed.

As the ride stopped, the child got scared and nervous and attempted to leave the cabin.

I hate to be mean, but where were the parents on this one? A parent should know their child well enough to make a judgement call as to weather or not the child is ready for a carnival ride. He met the requirements set by the carnival rules, and the judgement call shouldn't be in the hands of Butler Amusements. Secondly, there was proabobly a warning sign before the que, saying who should and shouldn't ride.

Again, I don't want to appear as a mean/rude person, but the fact that the parent wasn't there on the ride with the child, or made the call that he is mature enough to ride the ferris wheel sort of makes me a little ticked off that some people might be blaming the carnival operators.

This is why there are AGE restrictions in addition to height requirements for a lot of rides such as log flumes, observation towers, and bumper cars. The kid's mother should have been riding with him. It's tragic though.
