News: Boy dies on coaster at Disney-MGM

Posted at 4:17 PM EDT (2017 GMT)

Jun. 29th, 2006 -- A 12-year-old boy was pronounced dead after riding Rock-N-Roller Coaster with his father at Disney's MGM studios Thursday.

The incident occurred around 11:30. The boy was given CPR and taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The Roller Coaster has been shut down for an investigation into the cause of the incident. Both Disney and the Orange County Sheriffs office are conduction investigations. A Disney spokesperson said a preliminary investigation showed that the ride was operating normally when the incident occurred.

Rock 'n' Roller Coaster launches riders from 0-60 mph in about 2.8 seconds. The ride is synchronized with a specially recorded Aerosmith soundtrack.

This is the second fatality on a ride at the Disneyworld resort this year. In April a woman died after riding Mission Space.

There's that, and the minor inaccuracy which implies, if not states that Mission: Space is a roller coaster... I know I'm picking nits at this point, but it bugs me.

I fear that Disney does not have the signage at the front of many of its rides stating "If you have any of the following pre-existing conditions, You May Not Ride:...". Please correct me if I am wrong, but I'm under the impression that since the State of Florida does not inspect its rides (not that I'm saying it should), they might not mandate the safety wordings, or at least not in strong enough language. This paragraph is based predominantly on conjecture, so please correct me if/when I am coming to false conclusions by way of inaccurate data.

It does seem as if Disney is getting some very bad luck here. The recent deaths on Mission:Space and now this have been 'random' (not caused by a stupid rider) and events that could happen at any park.

Yeah it mentions in the AOL article that all rides at Disney have warnings posted for people with pre-existing medical conditions.

An interesting note, though, there was a survery that accompanied the AOL article asking if people worried about their safety when they were at an amusement park, and 50% said yes. That's pretty amazing to me.

I actually just read some of the message board comments on AOL and voted. Some people because they hear the worst about an amusement parks think that way about all of them.

It is really sad that the Disney company is having a lot of bad luck. I think the ride was operating normally, but that the child had an undiagnosed condition.

Now, most of you might say the parent is to blame. Well some parents don't like rides. The boy was 12 which is pretty ok by me to ride alone. If he had a previous condition, say heart related, I will tell you this, most doctors don't even catch heart problems until after something bad happens. It's just sad and tragic that things like this happen.

But, it happens everyday whether we like it or not.

OK this is just getting plain ridiculous. Im not trying to sound cold but what in the world is going on at Disney World and its sister parks? This is supposed to be a park that is for the entire family to enjoy and I do beleive it lives up to its name. Ive been on the Rock N Roller Coaster before and granted it is intense but not exactly the most intense coaster out there. I think what is happening is that people are getting a false sense of security because its at a Disney park. They may think all these rides are made for the entire family, when indeed not all of them are. Tragic in itself, but sadly I dont think this will be the last time either. I do feel for all these families but signs are clearly posted around the rides for people to read.

That's kind of scary because I rode R'n'RC when I was 11. They didn't really say he had a condition, but considering the ride is rather tame compared to other launched coasters, I'd have to assume he had something wrong. It's really unfortunate that this should happen to anyone anytime at any park, nevermind just Disney.

Goddammit, not again. First off, yes, Disney has all the proper warnings posted everywhere at every ride. They announce them numerous times while in line, as well as exactly what the ride does. Also, like every Disney ride, the thing is thoroughly inspected and tested each morning. The rides are completely safe and there are plenty of warnings, and they are not that intense compared to whats out there. I think the problem is that people assume "Oh, it can't be that intense, it's Disney! So I should be FINE riding this!" And that is why these things happen. Either that, or it's just a really, really bad cooincidence.

Its sad, but, ya know, the ride has gone 7 years without any issues. And it was operating normally. So its not the ride.

And they BETTER NOT tone down the ride because of this.

This is all due to a false sense of security like nitro said people thing Disney is all kids rides and Disney is trying to draw in the thrill seeker too and parents are not looking at what they are getting on. It has nothing to do with warning signs or not cus Disney has thousands of those posted all over teh place.

You guys are also losing sight of just how many people go through the rides at Disney. We should expect more deaths to come of out Disney World due simply to the huge volume of guests. This isn't your local Six Flags.
