News: Voyage sails to top spot in coaster poll

Posted at 11:34 AM EDT (1534 GMT)

Aug. 11th, 2006 -- Mitch Hawker’s roller coaster poll is considered by many to be the gold standard in roller coaster polls.

For 2006 Mitch introduced an in-season feature allowing members of the 2005 poll to update their list of top coasters to include the new wooden coasters of 2006.

Not surprisingly The Voyage at Holiday World jumped to the top of the 2006 poll after only operating since May.  Voyage is currently tied for the #1 coaster in the world with Balder at Liseberg in Sweden.  Voyage was built by Gravity Group LLC.

Other notable newcomers faired well.  El Toro, an Intamin pre-fabricated wooden coaster built at Six Flags Great Adventure in New Jersey is currently in a four-way tie for 10th place.  Kentucky Rumbler, a GCII wooden coaster built at Beech Bend in Bowling Green, KY took the 21st spot.

Last year’s 2nd place finisher Thunderhead at Dollywood in Tennessee is currently in a three-way tie for third place.

I rode Voyage and it's a great ride but I really like El Toro more. Sure it's not as long as Voyage but it was a Scarier experience. Voyage had tons of speed till the end but El Toro had great speed as well plus you are flying out your seat so much and for so long. Both should be on this list but I'd would have thought Six Flags only great Woody would have been higher on this list. But all coasters mentioned are great coasters.

Congrats to Holiday World for the Voyage and also to Beech Bend for making the list with their first major coaster.

This is an interesting read, but maybe the real story should be when voting begans for the voting for this year. I mean it is great that the Voyage is number one in his mid season poll, but is it that much of a surprise? You would think there was a load of towels on the way now.

Voyage looks like a great coaster, but El Toro it seems to me should be higher, El Toro is as of now my favorite coaster...

I enjoy Balder more, but mainly because of the reridability factor. Voyage is more out of control which is also good. Course if Megafobia is still on that poll I am beginning to question its validity.

Yeah, but if you count other things besides the coaster itself, Voyage actually opened on time, typically runs to capacity, actually uses the terrain, is at one of the friendliest parks in the world, which, by the way, hasn't cut back operating hours or entertainment mid-season.

All that aside, I haven't ridden either of them, but Voyage looks better. It just seems to have a lot more tricks up its sleeve than ET.

Voyage has overtaken the #1 spot!!! It's got it all to itself right now.

I like Voyage too rough, but it's still good, not too sure about being #1 though but still good.
