News: Golden Tickets announced, Thunderhead holds on to #1

Posted at 9:47 PM EDT (0147 GMT)

Aug. 27th, 2006 -- Today the Amusement Today “Golden Ticket Awards” were presented at Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari, Santa Claus, IN.

In a bit of an upset Dollywood’s Thunderhead wooden coaster held off newcomer The Voyage, located at Holiday World.

Although Voyage missed the top spot in the wooden coaster category it did receive the award for best new ride of the year.

Best steel coaster went to Superman Ride of Steel at Six Flags New England.

Some awards were not as much of a surprise such as Cedar Point who took best amusement park.  Schlitterbahn Waterpark Resort took best water park.  Again this year Paramount’s Kings Island took best kid’s area.  Friendliest staff and cleanest park again went to Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari.

For more information and to see a complete list of all the winners visit AMUSEMENT TODAY.

^ I knew you'd be the first to post in here. LOL

Little Dollywood went from obscurity to having the #1 wooden coaster two years in a row. Not bad at all. :)

^I'm always the first in the news of course, that is if it is about Dollywood. And yes Thunderhead has definetly brought Dollywood into the light. It has finally given Dollywood the spotlight they deserve. And hopefully it will be three years in a row next year.

Thunderhead is a great ride, but it doesn't even compare to The Voyage. Its like saying the Woodstock Express at Cedar Point is better than MF.

I'm glad Thunderhead gets some love. It's a fantastic ride. I'm glad some partial removal of the CP bias was removed as S:RoS assumed it's rigtful position ahead of the overrated MF.

Other than that, the awards are a joke. When will they ever choose a different #1 park? Cedar Point has gone slightly down while other parks have been much better in past years.

Congratulations to Thunderhead. Cuts right into The Voyage in a year that the ride and El Toro with a late entry take wooden coasters to bold intensity.

I'm glad Superman Ride of Steel wins again : ) .

No surprise at all...
Though I dont agree with all teh awards I did think thats how it would have played out. Riding thrunderhead AND voyage I gotta say they both are neck to neck in my book.

I'm sure that Voyage will take #1 next year. Not everyone that votes has gotten a chance to ride it yet I'm sure.

Also, why is Beast still in the Top 10? That is a bigger joke than CP always winning best park every year.

Raven also gets way too much respect. No way that it should be #7 and Legend #9. Legend has always been far superior in my book.

I must say though that I feel very lucky to have ridden 5 of both top 10 lists (5 wood & 5 steel).

Congratulations to all of the winners. I am not too surprised at the results. I'm glad S:ROS won best steel coaster.

I did think that The Voyage would win best wood coaster, but I have not been on that or Thunderhead. Thunderhead must really be awesome. I'm gad I have it in my coasterdraft park.

It's nice that the host park won some awards, but I think everyone knew they would. How many years have they won friendliest park?

Once again Magnum takes first place for the most overrated coaster. "X" and "Kraken" get the shaft as the two most underrated coasters on the block.

Surprised yall didn't mention SFFT winning best shows for 8 years in a row now. Anyways I am happy for SFFT.

Well I have yet to go to Holiday World to ride there wood coasters, and I haven't been to Dollywood either. But based on my rides on El Toro thats currently my fav woodie and coaster in general.

I can't believe Beast it still top 10, with all the great woodies built the past 5-10 years and all the classic woodies that are WAY better theres no way it belong there.

Obviously Disney's shows have nothing on SFFT. I mean, Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, Fantasmic, Illuminations, Remember, Indiana Jones Sunt Show, Lights Motors Action!, and a few others can't beat Country Unleashed 2006... It's pointlessly biased, and some really pathetic coasters (#3, Triangle Hills) don't deserve any of it. Go ride Balder or Exped. GeForce...

I have not ridden Thunderhead, but I cannot BELIEVE it came in ahead of Voyage. I don't think enough people have ridden Voyage yet. I'll give it next season. If it doesn't place in teh next two years, I'll cry. I really want to get to Dollywood to see what all the talk is about though, and to catch a ride on Mystery Mine. It look ssweet, and not enough parks are adding rides like that these days *cough* *cough* Cedar Point *cough* *cough*. I agree that Millenium is overrated. I'm surprised it took so long for S:ROS to take it's place. Magnum is so much better than Millennium IMO. Their new coaster may get the gold next summer though. It's shaping up to look pretty wicked so far. The rest of the awards seemed typical. Congrats to Dollywood though! At least they deserve it.

First of all about Voyage not winning #1. No wooden coaster has ever placed higher in it's first year. So that means no wooden coaster ever starts at #1. Look at Thunderhead debuted at #6 in 2004 then went to #1 in 2005. So basically it will probably win next year but just because it's new it's not going to win. But Thunderhead still deserves it.

As for Holiday World in general it is the most over rated park I have ever seen. Tied for 8th best park honestly that's a joke.

^I agree, I would actually vote holiday world as most UNfriendliest staff, though the park WAS clean!

Simply put, if enough people don't ride a coaster, they can't vote for it. The Voyage debuted not even four months ago and the voting has been done for a little while. Keep in mind, Holiday World doesn't get as many people at the park as some bigger parks so that's even less people.

I'm sure that next year The Voyage will take the award and also be a mainstay in the top 5 for many years to some.
