News: SeaWorld suspends fireworks over environmental concerns

Posted at 2:59 PM EDT (1859 GMT)

Aug. 29th, 2006 -- Nights at SeaWorld in San Diego have been quieter then normal recently. Last Sunday the park suspended its nightly fireworks show indefinitely following the threat of a lawsuit from the San Diego Coastkeeper environmental group.

The group charges that the remains of the fireworks - typically around 240 of them launched per night from a barge - pollute the bay with various chemicals and metals, a violation of the Clean Water Act. The Coastkeeper is particularly concerned with copper, lead, arsenic, and mercury which it claims is in the shells. SeaWorld denies the presence of the last three compounds in its fireworks.

The park is now seeking a special discharge permit that will allow it to release the chemicals.

I'm suprised to see that Donna Fry wasn't trying to sue them as well. That woman has been trying to demolish Sea World ever since I moved here 6 years ago. But if the Fire works truely are contaminating the water, I'm all for getting rid of them.

For a park dealing with animals. Sea World should definelty be concerned. If it's going to hurt something like water that the animals are in, The thing there trying to help it would make since to end the show.

My gosh do people not have better things to do with there time. Gosh go help clean up after a hurricane and get a freaking life. We have way worse things in the world to worry about then if SEAworld is putting chemicals in their fireworks, I mean come on they are SEAworld they need SEA life to keep the park going DUH.

I dont' have a problem with being responsible with the environment, but they have been shooting off fireworks at tons of cities over water for years and noone has ever said they would hurt anything.

Maybe those cities just didn't think to look at what it did to the water. Who knows why the do anything they do though.
