News: Hong Kong Disneyland falls short of attendance goal

Posted at 6:49 PM EDT (2249 GMT)

Sep. 5th, 2006 -- Confirming speculation about Hong Kong Disneyland's lower-than-expected attendance figures, the park announced yesterday that it has failed to meet its goal of 5.6 million guests since opening a year ago. However, park managing director Bill Ernest says that the park has brought in over 5 million visitors and expects to reach 5.6 million in September or October.

Ernest said the park was suffering "teething problems", one of which was the lack of familiarity with Disney stories and characters. He announced that the park is putting together a 10 to 15 minute-long pre-show for guests remedy this. Guests have also been seeking more events, which Ernest said the park is planning to do.

Ernest did not release financial figures, but said the park was on "solid financial footing".

How expected. This is what happens when you build a half-assed park that's smaller than Disney's California Adventure, hype it up too much, and then go damage the brand's relationship with the society via culture clash and insensitivity.

Ok over 5 million people is still good. There is alot of parks that probably don't reach there expected goal with in the first year. And it happens to alot of people when they take American started company's over seas. Look at Walmart in Germany I believe it is they are pulling there story's out of the country now because they where so out of touch. It happens to alot of company's all Disney has to do is correct the problem and that shouldn't be to hard. I would like to see everyone else translate the Disney idea to where people in Hong Kong will get it. Not an easy job so I think people need to back of Disney and let them make there mistakes. The only way a company will learn is just like a person trial and air.
