News: Myrtle Beach Grand Prix to close

Posted at 12:12 AM EDT (0412 GMT)

Sep. 8th, 2006 -- Officials for North Myrtle Beach's Grand Prix Family Thrill Park have announced their intentions to close the park and redevelop the land, to make the property more lucrative.

The family owned park in South Carolina will join the Myrtle Beach Pavilion in permanently closing the gates this month. Therefore, Family Kingdom will be the only park in the area.

Developers are planning to replace the facility, known for its go-karts and assorted amusement rides, with a 100,000 square foot shopping center.

I think they might already have closed the rides. Not sure. The place wasn't that great.

Either way the park is gone after next weekend.

I think I'll stop by there to pay my respects and ride anything that may still be operating.

WOW, now that is another surprise. I haven't ever been to this park but I didn't think it would close this soon...Especially after the Pavilion announced their closing I thought this park was going to try and get some of their bigger rides. I wonder if the water park that the family owns is also doing bad. Sad how little parks just can't seem to make it anymore.

DANG! I forgot all about this park! I drove by it, but it was off-season so it was closed, but got some pictures. They had a few cool flats, and then the spinning wild mouse. Always wanted to go there. O well!!

Wow another stinkin shopping center. I cannot wait to spend $100+ a night to go shopping. Myrtle Beach sucks. No Pavillion and now this. Why waist money to go shop. I hope that shopping plaza stands empty and goes bankrupt. I will take my cash elsewhere. I hope you do to.

Could this be because Hard Rock Park is coming in? And they are afraid that it they will have to close because of the competion.

Well, the plans to rip-out the pavilion started before anything abot Hard Rock was ever announced, but of course Im sure they could have gotten some inside information on the matter.
As for the Grand-Prix, I think its just a coincedence. The Grand-Prix truly was a Go-Kart park, with rides. Something different then what Hard Rock will offer. Also, It is more of a one night, or couple hour, event rather then a pay one price all day thing like the Hard Rock Park. I think the owners just decided they would make more money selling it then they would running it. =(

Hmmmmmm. A park being replaced by a shopping center, sounds like Opryland but a smaller version.
