News: Back to the Future closing confirmed

Posted at 4:42 PM EDT (2042 GMT)

Sep. 12th, 2006 -- After much speculation by fans, Back to the Future at Universal Studios Florida looks to be closing within the month.

Park officials have not set an official date, but employees at the park are saying it will close on October 1.

The ride was state-of-the-art when it debuted with simulator technology and large-screen projection systems to give riders the illusion they are traveling in a DeLoreon time machine featured in the three blockbuster Back to the Future movies.

Nothing has been announced in regard to what will replace the attraction.

Back to the Future debuted at Universal when the park opened in 1990.

I will kind of miss this ride, but it made me sick on my stomach. So I wasn't going to ride it anymore. :)

This ride is so vintage it's not even funny. . I realize it is very outdated by now, but it's a classic. We all knew it was goin to happen though. I think a newer version would be awesome but I'm sure that's out of the question. I hate to see a classic die, but that's the way it goes I guess.

Hopefully they go all out with the new attraction, as Universal needs all the hype they can get. I'm not too sad to see BTTF go, it was in horrible condition.

I'm glad that I had my last chance to ride this in February. It did become dated. I love the movie and since the Hollywood version is still around I'm ok to let go. The gift shop didn't get any better this time around.

Shame to see it go.
Screamscape has been saying that the rumored replacement will be the Simpsons. Which could turn out great, or burn horribly, we'll just have to see.

I was at the park last weekend and rode it. It is still fun. The Back to the Future gift shop had The Fast and the Furious gifts inside. Could this be the next attraction?

Fast and the Furious had been rumored previously, so it could possibly be in the discussion.

It's funny how the ride and 2nd movie have you going to 2015.

Funny how we are in 2006 and nothing is even remotley close to what they though the future would be like. lol

I'm still waiting to buy my hover skateboard.

On FATF... an indoor coaster themed to the movies would be cool. As long as they don't go the Italian Job route.

First off didnt BTTF open in 1991 a year after the park opened? Secondly its been rumored that the new ride will be The Simpsons: Sprint Through Springfield and that it will have you riding along with Otto in the Otto-Mobile, named after Springfield’s crazy bus driver and he would take you on an out-of-control simulator bus driven tour of Springfield.
But who knows all I know is the Orlando Sentinal was wrong about the year it opened.

I talked to castmembers at the park and they all say that the Simpsons ride is the biggest rumor. Why would they make it the Simpsons when it would be a clone of Jimmy Neutron. Plus they already have a Shrek movie to. Plus they don't even own the rights to the Simpsons, as far as I know. The Fast and the Furious is a Universal film. Plus they added a FATF attraction at Universal Studios Hollywood already.

The FATF attraction is not really a ride its just part of the backlot tour if I remember right and from what Ive read about the simpsons rumor it makes sense that they would try and use the same type of techknology thats in the building already and just retrofit it and update it some and have something that ties into a major money maker like the simpsons. Personally I dont see FATF as a major cash cow for Universal.
