News: Theme parks cashing in on Halloween

Posted at 11:17 PM EDT (0317 GMT)

Sep. 29th, 2006 -- Since that first year in 1973, when Sinister Seymour served as Knott's inaugural "Ghost Host," the Knott's Scary Farm Halloween Haunt has become the park's most successful promotion and has evolved into the biggest Halloween park event in the world. It has spawned countless imitators and driven dozens of theme parks to follow suit.

"Those nights represent 15% of Knott's year-round attendance, a total that has risen each year. With numbers like that, very few amusement parks pass on the opportunities presented because of Halloween," said Leonard Pickel, editor of Haunted Attraction magazine.

"October is usually a dead, low-attendance season," Pickel said. "This gives them an opportunity to drive people to the events. It's something that can make or break their season."

For the first time in its 51-year history, Disneyland has decided to dress up the entire park for Halloween, tapping into the holiday's growing "mainstream appeal and lucrative potential.

"Halloween is no longer a day," said Joey Michaels, senior producer for entertainment at Disneyland Resort. "It's a big season."

In America, Halloween is a $3.3 billion dollar business that continues to grow each year.

Well I think that Disneyland is smart for cashing in on the Halloween craze. And more than likely they will make a ton of money.

^I don't know. But I don't really think that it could be to scary since everything Disney does is based on a family or young kids audience. And Halloween scares aren't really for little kid's. But I bet Mickey Mouse will be in a costume but of course still have his ears on. Other than that guess, I have no idea.

Disney World has the Not So scary Halloween and it dose really well. basically It's basically nothing but sets and a number of costumed, costumed characters.

I just wish My local park would start doing a Halloween event. i agree there is allot of Competition between LC, SFNE, and Dozens of single site haunts but it would be good to see them stay open the extra month.

Theme Parks Cash in on Halloween - Gee, ya think?

Knott's had Elvira as Mistress of Ceremonies for many years. I took a girlfriend one year (early 80's) and we had a great time. We went thru one maze at about 12:30 (the park closed at 1 am) and ran into a ghoul who half heartedly (he/she was bone tired) lunged at my girlfriend. As I got between them the ghoul fell and I caught (it). We began to waltz around the chamber. Someone came in behind us, saw this and asked: "What are you doing?" "We're dancing," I shot back. "What does it look like we're doing?'

Fun night.
