News: Pirates may replace Tom Sawyer at Disneyland

Posted at 3:44 PM EDT (1944 GMT)

Oct. 5th, 2006 -- Tom Sawyer Island, a feature at Disneyland since 1956, could join the list of past attractions at the park. According to websites that report Disney news, the park is considering redoing the island in a pirate theme.

The website MiceAge.com reports that the Disney budget, seeking approval this fall, sets aside $28 million to replace the island's wooded, backcountry theme with a more tropical, pirate-appropriate atmosphere that would include the conversion of Fort Wilderness into an interactive pirate museum.

A spokesman for Disney would not confirm or deny the report, saying, "We'll let you know when we have some details-if at all". Reportedly the island's conversion would be done over the winter, opening in time for the May premiere of Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End, the third installment of the popular film series.

Personally I always liked Tom Sawyer Island. It's a good place to get away from the crowds and just unwind for a bit. I know pirates probably would have more of an appeal, but Disneyland's already got one attraction devoted to them, do we need another?

^ agreed.
I think two Pirate attractions is to many, especially considering they'd almost be right next to each other.

I also find it interesting that this sounds like the original concept for pirates of the caribbean. POTC was suppose to be a walkthrough interactive museum like experience, this was before the worlds fair. When disney went to the worlds fair and designed the boat system for it's a small world, they decided the same ride system would fit perfectly with POTC. and the ride was born.

How would POTC fit with the Frontiertown theme?

This would totally throw off the theme of that area. Attractions like the Mark Twain wouldn't fit in any more.

I desperately hope this does not happen. It would totally mess up everything. And I like Tom Sawyers island. I remeber going there as a little kid..that place has alot of memories. And we really dont NEED another Pirates attraction. Besides the fact that the movies really arent that great :/

"How would POTC fit with the Frontiertown theme?"

The same way the Pirates of the Carribean ride has been fitting in with the New Orleans Square theme for the past 20 some years.

This seems odd that they would go out of theme and add another pirate attraction. I hope they dont' decide to do it. They just did a small renovation on the POTC ride for the movie series, so I dont' see why they feel the urge to do another attraction in it's honor.

Cris I this your Forgetting that Disney explained During the Wonderful World of Color about that fact. New Orleans was a stop for Pirates. The ride is a telling of the stories you may have heard at the local taverns or from the pirates themselves.

It will not fit in Right with Fronterland. But we can't say anything about the Mark Twain because they also have the Tall ship in that canal.

as for my side of the news. It's a bad move. Even if it's more Popular you then have to keep up with the crowds wanting to go in that area. the small rafts may not be enough. and it isn't really needed. Likely not going to happen but if you want the Interactive pirate museum take out one of the Gift shops. I'm sure there's some spot in NO square that they could install it.

You know, the only problem that I see with this is that the Dragon form Fantasmic is stored under the island all day, which means the show won't happen until the end of contruction.
