News: Legality of Adventure Park coaster called into question

Posted at 6:31 PM EDT (2231 GMT)

Oct. 12th, 2006 -- Officials of Frederick County, MD, have proclaimed that the Wildcat roller coaster under construction at Adventure Park USA is illegal, something park owner Larry Stottlemyer denied in a press release two days ago.

County officials say that a permit is needed for the 44-foot-tall coaster, something Mr. Stottlemyer says he was told he didn't need because Wildcat is not being built as a permanent structure. The coaster has no footings or foundations and is powered by a removable plug. County officials also say that the coaster was not included in a plan approved three years ago.

In response, Mr. Stottlemyer says that Wildcat is being built in an area that was approved for amusement rides, including roller coasters.

How exactly can you build a coaster without footings or foundations?

^Its similar to Lazer at Dorney Park (and probably several other coasters). Its essentially a more permanent version of a carnival type ride. Lazer has large tubs filled with water which I presume are for weight and stability.

"It is put up in 14 days and taken down in 7 to be moved to a new location."

Why don't they just get a permit and build one similar to the desin that way it is permenat. Or maybe even build a better one that is permenat.

For anyone who wants to know, this is the Schwartzkopf coaster that was at Williams Grove before their demise. AND YES it was in the plan for this park, despite what the commisioners say. You can find the plan in AMUSEMENT TODAY September 2003. There are also some recorded at the courthouse and assessment office in Frederick County Maryland.

This is getting heated because of some elections. Silly politics. The STATE siad ewverything is as it is supposed to be, the county is getting picky. I work with Frederick county goverment and it is as corrupt as anything. (If you only knew!!) Stottlemeyer is correct in saying that he does not need a permit because the structure is not being footed and it is below 60 feet. I am actually trying to set up a meeting with Mike Cady and Stottlemeyer to see what is happening. I post any updates.

It's a shame. It's a nice roller coaster. Quite fun. He did a repaint and looks nice from the highway.
