News: Native American tribes consider theme park venture

Posted at 9:33 AM EDT (1333 GMT)

Oct. 19th, 2006 -- Local Oklahoma Native American tribes who together own 168 acres at the site of a former boarding school within one-hour drive of Oklahoma City are looking into the possibility of building a new historical or amusement park.

The former Chilocco boarding school was open from 1884 until 1983 and is listed on the national register of historical places.  The tribes will be renovating the school’s buildings soon and make a museum of the complex.

The remainder of the land is being looked at to build an attraction like a theme, historical or water park with a projected cost of over $300 million.

In addition to the park, each of the five tribes involved will develop their own businesses, such as hotels, restaurants and movie theaters.

Tulsa, Oklahoma City and Wichita are all within one-hour drive of the proposed site and the close proximity of these growing cities is the main reason the tribes are looking at this new venture.

I'm just trying to think what a park would be like designed by Native American tribes. But hey if we get a new theme park it's all right with me.

I know this may sound a bit racist but if they have 300 million to build a park and Modify a building into a museum the US government needs to start removing all these protections that they still have.

I will cry like a baby if they build us a major theme park in Oklahoma! The reason they have all that money is because the Indian Casinos down here are RAKING IN THE DOUGH! It is ridiculous how much money they have, and how big some of their Casinos are geting around here. A lot of students are dropping out of school around here because they can earn a decent living working at the Casinos. There are full out resorts popping up in the funniest little places in Oklahoma thanks to the Indians. So far it has worked out great for our economy around here, but I'm not sure how well it will work in the long run. A new theme park would just be too good for words though! I'd be just over and hour and a half from three parks then!! That place is like 45 minute DIRECTLY north of where I am at school right now. The road to get there is only three blocks from my dorm! I should drive up there some weekend and check out the site, just to see the property.
