News: 12-year-old thrown from Mad Mouse at SC State Fair

Posted at 12:53 PM EDT (1653 GMT)

Oct. 24th, 2006 -- Saturday a child was ejected from the Mad Mouse coaster at the South Carolina State Fair.

The 12-year-old boy was thrown from the coaster around 5:30pm Saturday evening. The fair’s first aid took care of the boy and transported him to a local hospital.

The only injury reported was a broken leg and the child is expected to fully recover.

The coaster was closed and remains closed pending investigation.  The incident is still being investigated at this time.

The midway at the South Carolina State Fair is run by NAME, North American Midway Entertainment. According to NAME's web site, they were bringing their Zamperla Twister "Crazy Mouse" coaster to this fair. However, they recently purchased a new Fabbri mouse coaster (possibly the Spinning Madness model) named "Mad Mouse". So, it is unclear which coaster was involved.

Added: http://www.wistv.com/Global/story.asp?S=5578994 This news article makes it sound as if it was the new Fabbri coaster. According to the child thrown from the ride, the lap bar did not latch but the car was dispatched.

^ I think it was a Fabbri model. I rode it the other week.

Also the story said they "assumed" that the restraint did not latch.

I find that hard to believe as they checked mine very closely when I rode. Plus it was a heavy bar and I can't imagine someone holding the bar up so it doesn't lock. If that was the case I'd think the mother would be thrown too.

I'm sick and tired of hearing of all these deaths and injuries from fair rides. What is going on?

^Well the fact that fairs are set up so fast doesn't help. Most of the time people running them don't help. And I'm not sure about this one but are the fairs regulated by the state, because some states don't regulate theme parks so maybe the fairs aren't either.

The fairs are regulated by the states (at least around here they are).

Each ride has an approval sticker type thing on it showing you that it passed inspection.

^True but that could be a one time a year inspection it may not be every single place they set up. I don't know though for sure.
