News: Six Flags' third quarter income drops 16%

Posted at 4:18 AM EST (0918 GMT)

Nov. 3rd, 2006 -- Net income fell to $164.7 million ($1.08 a share) from $195.7 million ($1.29 a share) from a year earlier, Six Flags reported.

Attendance declined 12% in the quarter after the compay raised prices at the gate. The company also blamed inclement weather for the attendance decline. Rainy weekend weather at six East Coast parks and extreme heat in the West allegedly kept potential customers away.

The company also noted that it would announce next month whether or not it would sell the six properties that were put up for sale earlier this year. The company is considering the sale of those parks to relieve its $2.1 billion debt load. All six properties generate approximately $75 million in adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization.

CFO Jeff Speed said the company had sent out detailed information about the parks to 50 interested parties. Several responded with offers, and officials made a first cut of bidders, Speed said. The interested parties were not disclosed, but Speed and Chief Executive Mark Shapiro said the company had given presentations and tours to those people.

We are in no way committed to sell," Speed said. "If we don't see proper value put on the table for what we think these properties are worth and help us to achieve our objective on the balance sheet side, we're not going to sell."

HELLO, STOP RAISING THE DANG GATE PRICES. lol. And they wonder why people dont go to the parks they own. The heat in Ohio has never kept people from going to the parks here. Or nether has the rain. To put it truefully Six Flags is slowly getting out of the theme park business. You cant blame the high ticket prices on the weather. People wont go to a park who is every year raising the prices and not lowering them. Take a note from Cedar Fair. If you lower them they will come.

Ummm.... I go to Great Adventure and that has to be the most populated park in the whole chain and one of the most visited parks in the whole country! Even if the price is too high millions of people come. It's called a SEASON PASS, buy it!

^ But not all their parks are that way.

Attendance is not just about the mega parks. Most of their parks are medium sized parks like SFKK or SFNE.

SFGAFan4 - Actually SFGAm is the top performing park in the chain SFGAdv is number 2.

as for season passes your looking at $75(up from last your) and $50(up from last year) for a parking pass. So that's $125 just for one person. That's a bit less them 6 trips to my local Amusement park. and my local park has better food and better prices on them. Parking is free. That's one for the reasons Why My Home park Canobie lake park is Nearing A million in attendance Up every year. and SFNE is down.

As for weather it's a bull Sh!t Excuse. People still co in bad weather and Corporate picnics don't get canceled. Every park in New England saw an increase of attendance yet SFNE saw yet another loss. Weather is practically the same especially when talking about SFNE and LC.

^Great Adventure is the largest park in the whole chain and yet there is still hours of lines so how is that possible? New York City, Atlantic City, and Philadelphia are more popular than Chicago.
