News: Geauga Lake to remove X-Flight

Posted at 9:05 AM EST (1405 GMT)

Nov. 22nd, 2006 -- Geauga Lake and it's parent company Cedar Fair has decided to remove its newest roller coaster to another park.

X-Flight, a Vekoma flying dutchman, built in 2001 is already being dismantled. The $15 million dollar roller coaster was the midwests first "flying coaster".

The desicion was made after a lackluster year in attendance at the park. The numbers were quite low despite putting $30 million dollars in the last two years into expanding the water park.

Neither Cedar Fair or Geauga Lake is saying where the roller coaster will be going to in the chain.

Well we know it won't be Carowinds. LOL.

I'd probably put my money on PKI. Dorney just got a coaster last year.

DAMMIT!
I'm going to GL this summer and was really hoping to ride this coaster.
I want to get on at least one real flying coaster...the craptastic Tomb Raider at PCW doesnt count.

I dont get the decision though...They have low numbers so they remove a signature attraction? Wouldn't that make numbers/attendance lower? Unless of course they announce a huge new project for it's place, but I doubt that.

Remind me again why I should want to go to GL next summer? I hate this decision, although it will probably be best in the long run as far as finances go. But it means the removal of a truly fun ride. It was my favorite steel coaster in the park. Man, that side of the park may look like crap if they don't do something soon. They better be putting a damn good hyper in there in the next few seasons. I just don't see how this is going to help attendance. But I guess they are trying to match the attendance with the operating cost of some of their rides, and the operating costs outweighed the attendance considerably.

This won't go to any of the paramount parks. They won't add anything there for a couple years. Knott's has been having some construction going on for a while, perhaps it will be moved there. CP has been rumored to be already removing DD, maybe it'll go there?

It's not going to Knotts. They're putting in a spinning coasters, it's already been announced with renderings of the ride and train.

Why would it go to PCW? They already have a flying coaster, if a bit of a piece of junk though.

If they put it in at PKI, I guess I'll HAVE to go back there again next year. lol I was planning on skipping PKI next year. grrrrrrr.

We can probably safely rule out:

Knotts - is supposed to be getting a spinner
PGA - they had Stealth (Borg) already
PCW - they have a flyer (Tomb Raider)
PC - they have Borg

Also...

PKD - they just got Italian Job
Dorney - they just got Hydra last year
PKI - got Italian Job last year

So it seems to me that it's between Dorney and PKI.

I'm with James on this one. They are probably going to slowly kill it and then sell off the land. I'd better get up there next year!

What makes everyone so certain on where the ride is going when CF hasn't yet announced what they're doing with it?

It could go to PKI,PKD or DP....I don't see it going to VF what with Renegade being added & I certainly don't see it going to CP either what with maverick being added.

DP might be a contender,IIRC wasn't hydra added in 04,not 05? PKI & PKD are also contenders especially due to CF's recent purchase of the paramount chain & the need for less expensive rides...PKD could also benefit by giving it a top gun theme as they're the only paramount park currently without a top gun themed attraction.

the point is we don't know where the ride will end up right now or when it will be rebuilt....one thing's for sure is that it will probably sit in storage for a season or two at GL while CF decides where to send it & when to send it.

What about Worlds of Fun?

I'm kinda disappointed, but I hope it's moved to PKI.

That really sucks, it was pretty much the best coaster there, in my opinion.

Well I must say this is a truly stupid decision. I personally don't like flying coasters but it was the park's biggest draw.

Enjoy Geauga Lake now. It'll be closing in a few years.

I'm mad as crap at this X-Flight was one of my favorite coasters there. I am starting to lose faith in Cedar Fair with this park seriously. I can understand if they are trying to make the park smaller and make it more family friendly however I still think that removing X-Flight is a dumb freaking move.

Some of you are insane...X-Flight the best ride at GL? You haven't really been there, have you?
