News: Astroland sold to developers

Posted at 4:46 PM EST (2146 GMT)

Nov. 28th, 2006 -- Coney Island's 3.1-acre Astroland amusement park has been sold by the Albert family to a developer, who intends to redevelop the site into a year-round resort. Coaster enthusiasts can rest assured though, as the famous Cyclone roller coaster will remain open under the Albert's ownership.

At the end of the 2007 season, Astroland will close and will be redeveloped at a cost of $1.5 billion. The plan for the new resort includes a hotel and the addition of a new roller coaster.

The Alberts will continue to own some of Astroland's rides. They eventually hope to move the rides to another site and add new attractions.

See the Asbury Park Press for more.

A new coaster huh? Nice! I wonder if it will be a family ride or a full scale thriller. Wood or Steel? This could be cool for that area. We'll see what happens.

What a great thing for Coney Island. They needed someone to keep up with the land and add to it. This should be great to attract more people there during the season.

I hope they leave the Top Spin. Dear god, keep the wonderful wonderful Top Spin. The Ship is classic too. I wonder though, this means that a nice resort will stand next to Deno's and the even crappier freak show/ go karts area? Weird. I can't imagine it being very succesful, but we'll have to see.

I would die laughing if it came out later on down the road that donald trumps the one that wants to build it.

I don't care what else they get rid of so long as they keep Skeeball on the Boardwalk and the Top Spin.

Well isn't Cyclone a landmark anyway? It can never be removed right?

I teach in a High School in Brooklyn that is practically up the block from Nathan's on Stillwell Avenue.

Check out the link at the end of my post.

The proposed coaster will NOT be a family coaster. This is going to be a great thing for Coney Island, and hopefully will restore it to its past greatness.

It will be interesting to see if this is successful. If anything, just to get a world class coaster down the block will be nothing short of incredible.

Ok, that article sounds fantastic! As for taking away from the "honky tonk" feel of Coney, if they do things right, they could design everything to appear very retro and vintage, and still keep that old time charm. Sounds liek they are going to put the right amount of money into this project to do it up right. This is VERY exciting!

When I heard this, I plotzed. I, personally, would prefer a collection of various Mom & Pop concessioners rather than one large development on the Boardwalk. I fear that this may remove all the charm that these various businesses have from being around for so long, doing things the way that they always have done... But I'm probably in the minority on this topic. [sigh]...

My favorite part of the article are at least from a similar one is this --

Thor’s plans includes a new 4,000-foot-long roller coaster from Intamin.,
Awesome.

Looks like I will have to make a trip up to Coney this coming year before it is remodeled.

Hey, I am with you Itngrcr9051 on the mom and pop stuff. I've never been to CI so I don't really know how things work there. I can definitly see your point of view on that. It is a shame to see places like that die off. It's a hard situation though because Coney is such a tiny shadow of the glory it used to be. It will never return to the way it once was, but at least this way it will stay alive in some form. I would give anything to go to Coney Island during the twenties.

Is the Wonder Wheel a part of Astroland? Or is it owned by someone else?

I'm also with ltngrcr9051 in this one. I think Astroland and Deno's (owners of the wonder wheel) have done great job with rides. While they do have a bit of a carnival feel to them It's what I expect form any Boardwalk park. I can see developing the smaller parks that only had go carts, bating cages, and similar low brow attractions. But this plan is a bit overboard.

this is too good to be true. and with them asking to rezone the land to residential I'm inclined to believe the Lets get it changed re sell and let another developer build condos Rumors.

Deno's hasn't been mentioned yet. so are they buying deno's or are they going to get them forced out? how do they plan on Fitting the building around the Classic Wonder wheel? not to mention how much this is going to change The board wank from a classic attraction to a modern freak show.
