News: Voyage named No. 1 wooden coaster

Posted at 3:29 PM EST (2029 GMT)

Dec. 9th, 2006 -- Holiday World's The Voyage sailed into first place in Mitch Hawker's 2006 Internet wooden roller coaster poll, considered by many to be the most accurate poll.

The new-for-2006 hybrid woodie made by The Gravity Group made coaster enthusiasts drool as it was being constructed, and most reviews say it is not a let down at all.

Second place goes to Liseberg's Balder, which took the No. 1 spot in 2005. The Intamin "plug-and-play" coaster, built in 2003, uses a track fabrication that gives a much smoother ride than a traditional wooden coaster.

Balder was ranked seventh in the 2004 poll.

El Toro at Six Flags Great Adventure, America's only Intamin plug-and-play coaster, took third. El Toro opened in June and has the steepest drop on a wooden coaster at 76 degrees.

Hawker's poll includes more than 170 wooden coasters, and voters submit their votes via the Web. Voters mark what coasters they have ridden, specifying if they have ridden a coaster this year.

Voters then rank each coaster they've ridden, and Hawker's method compares the ranks against each coaster. The results are considered highly accurate.

The top 10:

1. The Voyage - Holiday World
2. Balder - Liseberg
3. El Toro - Six Flags Great Adventure
4. Phoenix - Knoebel's
5. Boulder Dash - Lake Compounce
6. Tremors - Silverwood
7 (tie). Thunderhead - Dollywood
7 (tie). Hades - Mount Olympus
9. Aska - Nara Dreamland
10. Colossos - Heide Park

Nice to see El Toro taking the 3rd place spot. Maybe it will surpass Balder in next year's poll.

(and the El Toro fans get pissed that it only got third)

But from most of the review i've read, it sounds like the best coaster won. =D

Of course, this may change down the road, it all comes down to maintanence. HW has a good track record for that, but for a monster this size, who knows. SF has a horrible track record for that, but Intamin plug & plays seem to be almost maintanence free, so it will be interesting to see.

El Toro should pass Balder.
Balder was cool and all.. But El Toro just owns it in every way.

I put toro 4th on mine.. And Balder...16th.

Voyage isnt all that good, not good enough for the number one spot, I didnt enjoy my experience on it. As far as Im concerned, El Toro is the worlds best wood coaster, and nothing less.

A well deserved honor, in my opinion. The insane pitch black rides that I had during Holiwood nights has made it far superior to anything I have ever ridden.

Way to go Holiday World!

Having ridden both Thunderhead and Voyage I still have absolutely ZERO idea why Golden Ticket put Thunderhead above Voyage.

This one sounds like they got it right.

And major props to Gravity Group- They've built two coasters, and they both made top ten. These guys are the real deal!

Voyage so totally rocks my world! As for the maintenence comments, they already retracked over 1000ft on Voyage, so I think the ride will stay in great shape. If they keep doing that it will ride like new new every year! I rode it in Mid August, and there was not a single moment that I thought would need retracked, but they did it anyway. This is definitly my #1 coaster.

Glad to see that Voyage won, but i'm mad that Shivering Timbers didn't even get top 10.
