News: Myrtle Beach Pavilion's The Attic bites the dust

Posted at 10:01 AM EST (1501 GMT)

Dec. 20th, 2006 -- The inevitable finally has happened.  The famous original building at the Myrtle Beach Pavilion Amusement Park most know as The Attic is now a pile of rubble as demolition of the park continues.

In the later years of the park, the building housed The Attic teen dance club and an arcade.

The oceanfront building dates back to 1948 and survived both Hurricanes Hazel and Hugo but unfortunately couldn’t survive the wrecking ball.

Despite repeated requests to Burroughs & Chapin Co. Inc. to save the building, the company still decided to demolish.

Demolition of the park will continue until June.  B&C have not announced future plans for the site at this point.

/ Tell me about it, I don't know why the Pavilion is going. It should be the Family Kingdom..it's just a fair on a parking lot. Gosh I'm so mad. I don't see why this wasn't stopped. Stupid.

Yeah, pretty much stupid.

I can't understand why they shut the Pavilion down. Most parks that are over 30 years old are here to stay. Not to mention the Pavilion always did a pretty steady business unlike nearby Family Kingdom, which was very well described above as a "fair on a parking lot", which had good and bad days. Also, the Pavilion had some pretty good rides for a right-on-the-beach park! Oh well, I guess just another shopping center for Myrtle Beach (like they need anymore).

But one good thing is, Hard Rock Park is going to be completed in 2008 and it's only about 10 miles from the Pavilion. Once HRP opened it would've hurt both the Pavilion and Family Kingdom's business anyway.

On a side note, I see Family Kingdom announcing its "Farewell Season" in 2009, the year after Hard Rock Park opens.

^ Coasterman was simply saying that he thinks Family kingdom will be closing in the near future, not that they are. Don't get to excited yet.

I agree once Hard Rock Park comes in I think that Family Kingdom will shut down and more than likely with the addition of Hard Rock Park the Pavilion probably would have closed shortly after it's opening any way.

It's still tough to see some of this stuff go. I will always remember this place from going as a kid all the way to my early 20's. I still can't beleive they were able to take it all!!! I do agree though that Family Kingdom should have been the first to go.
