News: Six Flags Magic Mountain to dismantle two roller coasters

Posted at 3:02 PM EST (2002 GMT)

Jan. 23rd, 2007 -- Six Flags Magic Mountain, known for its hair-raising lineup of thrill rides is pending the dismantling of two roller coaster attractions -- Flashback and Psyclone.

Flashback, a steel coaster featuring multiple steep roll-over dives, has carried over 8.9 million guests since it opened in April 1992.

Psyclone, a wooden coaster replica of the famous Coney Island Cyclone in New York, has carried over 17.1 million guests since its inception in March 1991.

"They're both being taken off the park map this year, and it's for future park expansion. We're always looking to add areas of the park that appeal to a wide audience," said Sue Carpenter, a spokeswoman for Six Flags Magic Mountain.

After it's dismantled, Flashback may be re-assembled somewhere else at Magic Mountain, but it won't be operating this year, Carpenter said. Psyclone will be smashed and scrapped within four weeks, she said.

But at a park known for the latest and greatest in thrillride technology, the aged Flashback and Psyclone coasters won't be missed much by thrill addicts.

X, a coaster that pitches its riders backward and forward in their seats even as it completes chilling drops, is also currently closed. However, the ride is undergoing routine maintenance and is set to re-open February 3, Carpenter said.

Are you kidding me? Here are two words for you.
What the..? Are they really considering restoring Flashback and moving it to another location in the park? That's incredible. I'm not againsts that at all, but that is just shocking to me. Sounds like Psyclone will meet a very harsh end. I want to see pics of that! I never ever thought I would be ok with seeing a woodie demolished, but I never had any attachemtn to this ride, and it will open up a whole area for expansion. I would have to actually say that that is ok with me. I think I need to go get my head checked now.

Yes actually ^^^. I heard a rumor like that some time last year. I think it was Mark Shapiro during the opening of Tatsu. I didn't believe it, but I don't see why it wouldn't happen. I bet if they did relocate it, it would obviously have a new paint job, possibly a new name, and possibly refitted and more comfortable OTSR's. People need to remember that they can NOT get rid of the OTSR. The clearance between the car and the beams of the coaster are very close. People would raise their hands, get hurt, and then sue the park and company. I really wonder what will happen to Flashback, or Trashback. Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing its somewhere...It really doesn't take up that much space...and i still need the credit :D. but Psyclone can rest in piece...or pieces...whichever you like better.

Wow wouldn't that be interesting for Six Flags get rid of a roller coaster and add the Wiggles World in it's place. But then again maybe they will put several flat ride in, some for the older and some for the younger crowd instead of the Wiggles World.

I hope they don't try and turn the park into a more family friendly park.

Maybe they will expand the water park?

I don't understand why they want to scrap cyclone though...?

as long as they put a tight ride in its place.

Unfortunately for you, that's exactly what they're trying to do.

Honestly, I've never liked Psyclone so no great loss. I've been bummed about Flashback, because it's a fun ride and usually didn't have much of a line - because of it's location in the park, especially it's proximity to the kiddie area, I'm gonna guess they'll put in more kids' rides. I've got a three year old that loves the park already though, so I'm perfectly okay with it! As long as they reopen Flashback elsewhere, anyway!

As a coaster junkie myself, and someone who lives five minutes down the street from Magic Mountain, I hope they do make it a bit more family friendly because I can't stand half the crowd at that park. I guess I'm getting too old already! lol...

I would rather have 8 great rides than 17 that aren't all that great.

Flashback....good riddance.
Psyclone was decent, I thought. Ideally I'd like to see them tear it out and build a top-notch wooden coaster, but it seems more and more likely that it'll be replaced by a kiddie zone. Personally, though, I don't know how well it's going to work. MM has the reputation as SoCal's thrill destination, Disney has the family-friendly market, and then Knott's is in between. MM certainly can't compete with Disney, even with significantly lower prices, and I think it'll take a lot for them to draw away Knott's market.

I'm not surprised at all. I have heard nothing but bad things from these coasters. Though reinstalling Flashback makes no sense. even if it's in good enough shape to be used Flashback would be a better addition for another park.

In response to rlrcstrfreak's comment:

I don't know where to start...where have you been? Six Flag's whole goal is to turn SFMM into a family friendly theme park so it attracts guests of all ages. That way they get more customers..

Psyclone - a mediocre coaster, although it was fun when the trains were turned around for Halloween.

Flashback - a coaster made of the material found at the northern end of a southbound horse. This was a prototype and there is a reason there was only one made. No Loss.

I haven't ridden it in such a long time, that I thought it used to have 5 seats. But anyway if they put better 4 seat cars on it, maybe those clearance issues could be solved and it would make for a better ride all together if the trains were changed from the awful style they have now. I remember it was like a grown man packed into a shopping cart rolling on a roller coasters track, doing hairpin dives.

^ Flashback has four-across seating, not five. I don't know where you got that from.
