News: SheiKra goes floorless

Posted at 3:26 PM EST (2026 GMT)

Jan. 31st, 2007 -- Via Press Release:

Two years ago, Busch Gardens Africa introduced the world to a one-of-a-kind experience: 200 feet up, 90 degrees straight down. And that was just the beginning.

On June 16, the adventure park will reintroduce SheiKra to the world with a new twist: floorless cars that allow riders an unobstructed view of the 70 mph rush.

When SheiKra opened in May 2005, it signaled a new era in American roller coasters. As the nation s first dive coaster and only the third in the world, SheiKra raised the bar with first-of-a-kind elements like a true 90-degree drop, an Immelmann loop and a second vertical dive into an underground tunnel. Now, technology has raised that bar even higher, introducing SheiKra s fans to an even greater thrill.

Mechanically, SheiKra s track will remain unchanged, with its combination of drops, inversions and a water feature finale. Psychologically, though, the effect of the floorless cars will be intense: SheiKra s cars will continue to seat eight passengers across, three rows deep, but riders will no longer be able to brace themselves for Florida's No. 1 thrill ride against the floor of the car. With the front rail gone, passengers in the first row, especially, will be completely exposed as they come over the crest of SheiKra s signature 200-foot, 90-degree plunge.

Guests last day to experience SheiKra in its current form will be Memorial Day, May 28. The following day, America s first dive coaster will close for approximately three weeks for the floorless conversion construction.

The coaster's existing seats and shoulder harnesses will be fitted into new chassis that support only the chairs above and the wheels below. Between each row of seats will be nothing but open air.

The bulk of the changes occur at the loading platform, where retractable floors and handrails will be installed. As each floorless car comes into the station, the floors will raise into position, filling the gaps between the rows so that passengers may board. A pivoting handrail will swing into place in front of the car to assist those boarding the first row.

Through the years, Busch Gardens Tampa Bay has set the standard for thrill rides, and I m confident guests will agree that the park has raised the bar yet again with floorless SheiKra, said Dan Brown, executive vice president and general manager, Busch Gardens Tampa Bay. SheiKra s enhancement, along with its unprecedented ride features, really reinforce Busch Gardens standing as Florida s foremost adventure
destination.

And all of the nay sayers have been silenced. Looks like some people knew what they were talking about all along. I want to know why they are not converting it over the winter. Is it so BGE can unveil the first floorless dive coaster? Seems like opening them at the same time would be wiser than shutting down the park's newest coaster for three weeks.

It has to do with allowing Griffon to have its opening first.
Right now BGT has basically had one of the major rides down each month for refurbishment , as Montu is down right now and the StanleyFalls is next...

How much is this change going to cost?

Speaking of changing it... they picked the worst time to, thats when the season is first gearing up, the last thing they need is a major ride shut down. But I guess they have to considering Griffon is already labeled as the first.

It is a stupid investment to change trains!

Who said they were changing trains? This modification was factored into the overall budget for the ride.

In addition, it's not like they're getting all new trains altogether. Just new train chassis. The current harnesses and seats will be reassembled on the new chassis.

I haven't actually ridden Sheikra as we were at Busch Gardens about four months before it was completed. Is it really the rush that everybody says it is? It looks very short but intense with the Immelman and the water feature at the end, along with the 90* drop. I'd like to get down there again and ride it with the floorless trains.

So...if this was planned before the ride was even built...why wouldn't they have this in the first place instead of closing it down now and installing the new items???

Simple... design and construction issues. They just couldn't simply build floorless trains and the station to go with it. They have to work out various engineering issues along the way, as what works for regular floorless coasters might not necessarily work for a floorless Dive machine. They may not have had the design ready in time for SheiKra, but had it ready for Griffon.

They can also learn from Griffon's construction and be able to apply lessons learned to SheiKra to help minimize downtime and other issues, since Griffon is a prototype of sorts.

My understanding is that they wanted Sheikra to be floorless in the beginning. The design was not going to be feasable in time for the coaster's opening, so they finished the concept for Griffon with the intentions of converting Sheikra. The coaster was already designed to make this tranformation with adequate space designed under the platform for the drop away floor, and the trains are only having to change over onto a new chassis design. All they are doing here is following through on a plan they have had since the beginning. My only beef is that they titled Griffon first for the hype and are closing a major ride when the season is really kicking in so they can keep Griffon's title for first floorless.

I think this is a bad move at this time. Let BGW open there Floorless and have there year of Glory. next year go ahead and modify or change the trains so that they have a floorless dive machine as well. But this seems like a waist right now.

I don't think it really matters. The general public aren't going to care that there are 2 floorless versions of basically the same coaster.

Plus they are 15 hours apart from each other. Most people won't know that there is another one in VA when they live in FL.

I really don't think the train being floorless or not will make a huge difference in the ride experience.

I'm gonna have to agree with Wes, for the GP, and majority of park guests it'll just be a small perk. Feel free to call me a ranting fanboy if you want but here I go:
When Griffon was introduced I admit I was the slightest bit disappointed that the layouts were almost the exact same but soon I came to realize an additional immelmann and floorless trains would make Griffon special. Though not many GP will know of both Griffon and SheiKra, there will still be that small percentage that knows. A conversation that could have went like this:
"This SheiKra ride is great, but at their other park in VA, they got one that has no floor so your legs are just dangling throughout the whole ride"
Will now go like this: "This SheiKra ride is great, they got another one just like it at that other park in VA."
It just seems whenever AB builds one ride at one park, they then build another ride at the other park that steals it's thunder. I'm not thinking one way about this, because Alpengeist did the same thing to Montu. And I'm not entirely correct, BGA as Gwazi, and no wooden coaster is likely to ever grace BGE. BGE has BBW and you'll find no swinging suspended at BGA. BGE has AC, which can kinda be compared to Kumba, if you wanna look at it like that, I would feel fine if Griffon had a year, but waiting until the day after the ride opens to start making the change, well, thats cutting awfully close.
