News: Sandusky area seeing shift to year-round destination

Posted at 10:53 PM EST (0353 GMT)

Feb. 2nd, 2007 -- The Sandusky area, typically a summer tourist destination, is quickly becoming a year-round place for families to visit.  Erie County Commissioner chairman Tom Ferrell credits Kalahari for starting this growth.

Although Great Wolf Lodge was the first indoor water park to open in Sandusky, Kalahari is currently the largest -- and its getting larger.  Kalahari recently announced that they will double the size of their current water park and will be adding condos to their facility. Cedar Fair Entertainment Co., the parent company of Cedar Point, owns the Castaway Bay indoor waterpark.  Some smaller hotels in the area are also building indoor water parks, but on a smaller scale than that of Great Wolf Lodge or Kalahari.

Two other projects are also planned, but construction has not yet begun.  David Sangree, president of Hotel and Leisure Advisors, an Ohio consulting company believes that there is plenty of room for more parks.  One example that he noted was that of the Wisconsin Dells, Wis. area -- it has 18 water parks.

There are 18 water parks at the Dell's? That is just ridiculous! They should just all combine into one mege park! Woohoo! Sounds like Sandusky is catching on fire these days. Too bad my employment days up there are gone. I would love to have a job year round up there at the resorts.

Indoor water parks are great in the wintertime. They offer a much needed break from the cold weather. I'd like to see an amusement company expand on the concept and start an indoor amusement park in the area.

Good to see an area expanding there appeal year round. In indoor park would be nice but I don't see it happening. most of the year they would not be able to compete with the CF parks.
