News: Geauga Lake taking a shift in a new direction

Posted at 8:36 PM EST (0136 GMT)

Feb. 5th, 2007 -- Striving for a more intimate and family-centered image, Geauga Lake will remove their X-Flight and Steel Venom roller coasters near the park's entrance to make the park more inviting to guests.  The removal of these two high-profile attractions is one of many changes currently underway at Geauga Lake to swap its thrillride laden reputation into a more intimate regional family-entertainment park.

Aesthetics, operating and maintenance costs and stagnant park attendance all factored into removing the two roller coasters and the park’s monorail, said Cedar Fair's Chief Operating Officer, Jack Falfas. Geauga Lake also removed the towering Mr. Hyde’s Nasty Fall ride from the same part of the park before last summer.

Falfas said the presence of several big rides near the park’s entrance made it “not as inviting” as a Cedar Fair park should be. As for the monorail, it toted passengers over land where Geauga Lake’s original water park once stood, and Mr. Falfas likened that part of the park to “scars on the earth” that he’d rather visitors not see.  It was recently announced that the X-Flight roller coaster has found itself a new home in 2007 at another one of Cedar Fair's parks -- Kings Island, near Cincinnati, OH.  Meanwhile, Steel Venom is destined for storage at another park once it's dismantled, said Cedar Fair chief operating officer Jack Falfas.

“Our intent is to clean up that whole front area,” he said. “They have a large number of roller coasters and rides in there. It’s more than what the guest demand is (justifying) right now, particularly the way we’re going.”

Falfas says it has become clear that Geauga Lake’s appeal lies as a cozy, regional attraction rather than a thrill-seeker’s paradise.

“I think at first, some people assumed — and maybe we did ourselves — that Geauga Lake was ‘Cedar Point East,’” he said, referring to the Sandusky park’s reputation as a coaster capital. “It’s not going to be a Cedar Point East. It is a local park, it’s a great picnic park, it’s a community thing.”

However, the attractions will not be ignored completely.  Falfas noted that two of the park's thrill rides are scheduled for new expensive paint jobs -- one will which will also have cameras installed in every seat so visitors can buy a video memento of their ride and a movie/simulator ride is being re-themed.  In addition, the Raging Wolf Bobs coaster has been completely refurbished and there are plans for new attractions, but details were not disclosed.

I still don't think removing 2 coasters the same year and adding nothing was a good choice.

Why not just move the coaster to the other side of the park instead of putting it in storage. I would like to know when they are doing this since the parks site still has Steel Venom on it as a coaster. It dont say when its gonna be took out so i am hoping they wait till the season is over since its too late to do anything now. They need to make a area like a frontier town like thing in the area that they arent using or do a dark ride or something.

YEP! this is a corperate type downsizing thing. They are doing these in order to eventually close it down. Companies do this ALL THE TIME!

^^Thier not going to close down this park, that really wouldnt be a very good business decision, and to me wouldnt make much sense. Firstoff the park is in a good location, not to far from Cleveland, Akron, and around two or more hours from Columbus and Pittsburgh. Its attendence has been down and that has been hurting the park financially, so thierfore cuts had to be made, meaning rides that were a financial burden had to be let go. If a park cant afford to maintain something, then its crutial that they get rid of it, before they get themselves into one big hole. Also, Geauga Lake may not be appealing as it once was, but changes had to be made, if not, the park may not have survived. So look on the brightside, and see that better things will come, and the future of Geauga Lake is safe.

So since Top Thrill Dragster is down alot and its costed Cedar Point alot of money to fix it then should they get rid of it? Or do they have a some kind of warrenty on the parts and the ride its self with the maker? Geauga Lake needs a coaster over 200 ft tall to bring in more people. And post more signage to get people to the park easyer and faster. They must be making room for something big to take down 2 coasters one of which was real famous at Geauga Lake. I am hoping they wait till 07 is done to take down Steel Venom. Its still on the parks site as a coaster so its hard to tell if it will be running. I hope they wait cause its my fav. ride in the whole park and i want to do one last ride if i can.

THANK YOU CEDAR FAIR!! I am so happy with them right now. That quote just made my day. I'm so gald that such a big corperation actually can see something as intimate, and personal. They realize what Geauga Lake used to and still should be. Props to them. I like this a lot!

^^^Do you know why Cedar Fair is not gonna get rid of TTD? Because they can afford it, the park is very successful and draws in large crowds, generally bringing in around three million guest a season. Geauga Lake doesnt do nearly as well, which is why they removed the rides, because not removing them would only hurt the park in the long-run. Also, they moved X-Flight(Firehawk) to PKI because PKI can afford to maintain that ride, because they too bring in large crowds, and large crowds brings in money. If they moved it to MIA they would have likely have to relocate it again, because that park could not afford to keep operating it in the long run. This is a good business move, Cedar Fair knows what thier doing, if they didn't do this their debts would only accumulate even more.

I don't know how much good this Family direction will do for them. The water park will not do it and unless they add to the Dry park they will continue to fail.

In other words, they are getting rid of the park piece by piece and it will turn into a place like wyandot lake.

^It will never be like Wyandot Lake, and it wont ever be just a family picnic park again, like it once was. Geauga Lake will always have a little extra to bring to the table, basically a small park with a twist, unlike many other small parks. They want to bring back that classic anitque feel that Geauga Lake once had, while still operating the several coasters that are still on its property. If you want a mega park, then go to Cedar Point, because Geauga Lake is never gonna be that, and its time to accept that fact.

Dale4life...if you want, I can take a drive past GL every week once the park opens...I'll let you know if SV is running or not.

However, the park will never look like Wyandot Lake. I remember GL back before Six Flags ruined the park. It was a nice park with a handful of coasters and rides for EVERYBODY.
