News: Son of Beast will not be ready for opening day

Posted at 9:44 AM EST (1444 GMT)

Feb. 6th, 2007 -- Son of Beast, currently the World’s tallest and fastest wooden coaster won’t be ready for opening day on April 21.

Kings Island officials say that the 118-foot-tall loop has been removed, but other parts of the coaster are still under construction.

The Ohio Department of Agriculture required the park to make modifications after an accident on July 9 sent 27 people to the hospital. The park decided to remove the loop so it could use lighter trains.

Wow, and I thought they would have it finished. That's kind of surprising that they have had this long to fix it, I guess it is for the best.

They are trying to decide what new trains they will use on SOB. Maureen from PKI told people that they have narrowed the list of manufacturers to two and they need to decide before figuring out how they are going to redo the area where the loop used to be. Let's all hope that they do not choose Gerstlauer trains with those horrible u-shaped restraints...

^ Amen to that. Do you know which two they are considering?

I am assuming it is between Millennium Flyers and Gerstlauer's.

^GCII doesn't put Millennium Flyers on non-GCII coasters. They have a certain tracking configuration that is different then other woodie manufacturers.

They have put their trains up for sale, since they will be going on Wildcat this year. Granted, it was a GCII creation, however they are up for sale for people that wanted to buy them.

Do we have any pictures of the coaster since the loop was removed? I really want to see what parts of the ride are being modified, and what is happening in the gap where the loop used to be.

I hate to burst the bubble of some of you, but SOB is not getting a set of PTCs. I heard this from the Tom Rebbie (Pres./CEO of PTC) himself at EastCoaster. They flat out turned down King's Island, since PTC could not make the time frame they were given. With all the other stuff they're doing (mostly rehabbing trains they have sold to other parks), I do not blame PTC. I mean, two months is not enough time to design and assemble three trains from scratch.

If they install Gerstlauer trains, SOB will have its fate sealed. When trains cause a small coaster (like Hurricane at the former Pavilion) to become rough to the point where its reputation is ruined (despite its wonderful design), imagine what it would do for something the size of SOB.

This isn't that Surprising. Allot of work to do in a short period of time.

Can older style ptc trains work on that track?

They could be using the masters of steel to fabicate special trians for SOB. It wouldnt be the first time they have built wood coaster trains.

I thought one of the benefits of lighter trains was that it wuld smooth out the ride.
