News: Disney World employee arrested for child porn

Posted at 11:28 PM EST (0428 GMT)

Feb. 9th, 2007 -- A 20-year-old Disney employee, Matthew Wendland who was hired in July was released Friday after posting bond after being charged with 51 counts of possessing child porn.

Wendland dressed in costumes, playing the role of Beast (from Beauty and the Beast) as well as sometimes playing Goofy.

Police say he has no criminal record.

Police say Wendland’s roommates discovered the child pornography in his room and called the Orange County Sheriff’s Office.

Wendland is now suspended without pay from Disney pending the outcome of the investigation.

Disney spokesperson Kim Prunty says characters like the ones he performed as always have attendants with them.  She says he was never alone around kids, and he, like all of their employees, had a background check done.

In a statement, Prunty said that "all employees receive a thorough background check prior to employment.  It's a standard procedure, part of the employment process.  Nothing is more important than the safety of our guests," the statement said.

This is really scary, but there's nothing really that the park could have done since he didn't have a criminal background.

Seeing as Disney World is one of the biggest if not the biggest single location employer in the country, they're going to have a few bad eggs. I mean, think just how many actors there are that dress up as a character, thousands, so the fact that they only have ONE that is this bad is actually pretty impressive.

As many people Disney employs, I'm sure there are dozens more that haven't been caught in doing illegal acts. But there wasn't anything Disney could've done since he had no criminal record and they did the right thing by firing him, so really Disney is not at any fault.

If this was any other company, this wouldn't have been newsworthy, which is kinda sad...

We'll see whether it was REAL childporn or not. There's a lot of legal 18+ porn out there that looks like they are younger.

I hate that the Disney name was even attached to this. You don't read about the occupations of other offenders of the same acts. I'm just glad there is really nothing about this that can make Disney look somehow at fault. With no backround there was no way for them to know.

Its a news story because WDW is supposed to be the most magical place on earth, but an apparent pedophile was working as a character coming into contact with hundreds of kids a day. Obviously something that will concern the hiring department and possibly future guests.

And they are supposed to stop them from becoming employees how? If this was Six Flags, this wouldn't be news...that is my point.

Terrible thing to hear. But like said before there is nothing Disney could have done. i also agree if this had been smaller chain or other attraction it wouldn't be news Worthy or wouldn't hit anything but a local paper.
