News: Ghost Town to install new coaster and drop tower

Posted at 8:20 AM EST (1320 GMT)

Feb. 13th, 2007 -- Ghost Town in the Sky until recently looked the part of a real ghost town, due to five years of neglect.  Cables on the cable car ride are worn out, the concession buildings have worn out roofs and many rides appear neglected as well, some beyond repair.

But Ghost Town’s management and local businesses are hopeful.  Even as crews resurrect this ghost, local motel owners are already receiving reservations from tourists that are planning to visit the park this summer.

The owners are ambitiously moving forward to finish renovations early so employees will have plenty of time for training.  Workers have a little more than three months to go before opening day.

To make sure the park’s ski lift is in perfect working order, sources say they brought in the foremost incline expert in the world. He said the Ghost Town lift is the steepest in the nation, ascending at a 77-degree angle in sections, and also a very popular part of the amusement park experience.

The park’s plans don’t just include refurbishing old rides, but installing two new ones as well.  A 100-foot drop tower is planned along with a new family-friendly roller coaster.  These are added, even as a few had to be sent to the scrap yard.

As the park continues to refurbish the park and get closer to opening day, Maggie Valley moves farther and farther away from becoming a ghost town itself.  Without the success of the park, the town would surely struggle to survive.

Ghost Town is a great location for a drop tower.

I wonder if this drop tower is the same kind Castles n Coasters and Cliff's have. Because if it is, that's an excellent ride.

Probably an ARM/Larson Drop tower and a Zamperla spinning coaster.

^ How do you know this? There are at least 5 or 6 companies that I know of that make drop towers and who knows what the coaster will be.

Castles N' Coaster's is 140 feet tall. I'm actually surprised to hear they're getting a 100 ft one...not really scary, although the one at Castles N' Coaster can be pretty intimidating at times.

I would imagine the coaster would be a Vekoma family coaster (like Woodstock Express)... or some type of family spinning coaster.

I think they are guessing that it will be a ARM/Larson Drop tower because it tends to be the cheapest version of a drop tower you can get, and this park is not exactly cash-rich at this time... The towers by companies like Intamin and S&S are obviously more expensive...

S&S doesn't have a 100ft tower they have an 80ft double shot and a 120 ft Double shot. So unless it's a custom build which would cost more it's not S&S. The Cheapest way to buy used would be to Go with Zierer I'm sure they could get a deal buying both a tower and a Coaster.

Who cares how tall it is, the location is the key up there. Especially with the view and all...wow.

Good point. The mountain Height plus the 100ft will be much taller then any of the towers were used to.

My guess would also be a ARM drop tower. If the coaster is a spining coaster then that would be great, the zamperla ones are actually a whole lot of fun. Hopefully it isn't a particularly family friendly coaster and something along the lines of a small miller family coaster or something.

Even though 100 feet isn't aprticularly high, its sure to be a goood drop tower given the scenery around the park.

Miller family coaster are really good coasters. And they do make larger Coasters. In fact Six Gun City a weastern theme park in Nh has a Miller coaster with a custom mine train themed train. It's also much larger then you might expect.
