News: Joyland may fall victim to rezoning

Posted at 1:39 AM EST (0639 GMT)

Feb. 14th, 2007 -- Joyland, a 58 year-old amusement park in Wichita, Kansas, is at risk of being rezoned by it's new owners.

Last April, Joyland was reopened after being closed the previous season. The closure was due to unpaid bills and disputes between the park's owners, Stanley and Margaret Nelson, and their operating partners, Michael Moodenbaugh and Robert Barnard. Eventually the conflict was settled and as a result, Moodenbaugh and Barnard signed a lease-purchase agreement with the Nelsons. Under the terms of the deal, the operating partners made lease payments to the Nelsons and eventually purchase the park.

As of now, Stan and Margaret Nelson still own the property on South Hillside. However, they are hopeful negotiations with Michael Moodenbaugh to finalize the sale will be completed by the end of the month.

Margaret Nelson says she doesn't know about the buyer's plans for the property. But Wichita planning director John Schlegel says Joyland representatives came to the office to find out the process for rezoning the land for multi-family and commercial use. Nothing is final as reporters were unable to contact Moodenbaugh for comment about rezoning plans.

The city tells us the plans will be to rezone land next to hillside as commercial and other parcels for multi family. Multi family is anything from tri-plexes to larger apartment units.

Before anything is rezoned the application would come before the metropolitan area planning commission for a public hearing.

Why sell it to him if he's only going to rezone and destroy the park. I'm sure they could find some one out there to operate of buy the park and keep it as a park. Wild West World is going to be the only real Competition. Not to mention we could loose yet another ACE coaster Classic.

^Probably because these people will give them more money than someone wanting to buy and run the theme park.

Why do these small parks always shut down so that they can built stupid apartments and condos? Why the heck do they use amusement park property for that? There is plenty of land in this world for them. A park can have nothing around it, and bam, housing moves in. I hate it.

The problem is many of these smaller parks are owned by single families. Mommy and Daddy get old and die and JR's don't want to Run an amusement park. So they go for the move that will make them the most amount of money and land developers will offer them allot because they know they can make it back.

Now that isn't quite the case here. The owners are older and don't have the time. But the New owners seems to not want to deal with the park any more.

/ Yeah that's a good way to say it. Now days if a park isn't run in a huge headquarters somewhere in a large and populated city days away it'll fail.

I'm seeing it in New England. It was one of Whaloms problems and It may be a contributing factor to the Miss operation and lake of expansion to Funtown in ME. Santa's Village The 3rd generation is starting to take over with here son taking the rains but here Daughter wants little to do with it. in fact he became a landscape architect.
