News: Kings Island fights city's admission tax proposal

Posted at 4:29 AM EST (0929 GMT)

Feb. 14th, 2007 -- Only a decade ago, former City Manager, Scot Lahrmer, pledged on behalf of the city of Mason, to never issue an admissions tax on Kings Island and annexed the amusement park from Deerfield Township.

Trouble is, the city council never voted on such an agreement.

Now, Kings Island's executives are furious because the Mason City Council has had a change of heart. The Council's finance committee is considering starting a tax on tickets sold at Kings Island and also at the nearby The Beach Waterpark.

Kings Island Vice President and General Manager Greg Scheid, says the city has a moral obligation to keep its word.

"We were assured we would not be asked to replace that revenue," said Scheid.

Scheid also pointed out a University of Cincinnati study showing that a 6 percent admissions tax at Kings Island, which attracts more than three million visitors a year, would negatively impact other businesses in the region such as hotels and restaurants by as much as 14 percent because fewer tourists would visit.

Current member to the council, Tony Bradburn, retorted with the mention of one of the other twelve Cedar Fair amusement parks that pays an admissions tax: Cedar Point of Sandusky in northwest Ohio.

"Do you know there are 67 communities in the state of Ohio that have admissions taxes," Bradburn asked. "What makes you so special?"

Interestingly, the Mason City Council is currently searching for a way to reduce the amount of income tax paid by Mason residents who work in other cities. Mason charges a 1 percent income tax and residents who work elsewhere already receive a 50 percent tax credit, but council members want to eliminate the Mason income tax for residents who pay income taxes where they work.

Making these residents happy will cost the city government $2 million a year, which coincidently is the same amount the city stands to gain by charging the admission tax. Vice Mayor Tom Grossmann insists that the two proposals are unrelated.

"$2 million to us is a lot of money," says Greg Scheid. "We will fight it as hard as we have to."

What dose that have to do with this? Anyways this is a cheap deal. Unless they plan to do all entertainment it's wrong. They shouldn't be Singling out 2 attraction for this. Especially since this is only to save there residents a Lousy 1% Income tax.

2 million bucks is a lot of money. I don't blame the park for being upset by it, but how much would they realyl have to increase tickets for this tax?

Let's see, with a 6% tax, the Adult Admission would be raised from $44.95 to $47.65, and the Junior/Senior Admission would be raised from $29.95 to $31.75. Not much for PKI to be worried about, IMO.

I take it all the work being done on the road where Great Wolf Lodge is at is being done by the city and they want to make up for it by taxing Kings Island. Dont the city get money from them anyway from the land and food and worker taxes. Remember when Sandusky pulled a parking tax on Point and when the lawers said it was unlawful and they are doing it to take the money from them for no reason. They stopped it. Mason must have some big plans or need it to give them selfs raises and they dont have enough taxes to do it so they tax the poor theme park. Lol. Cedar Point has been as packed as its been in years cause of them lowering ticket prices last year. Most governments dont seem to think that when you lower taxes you dont spend alot on yourself on raises but alot of them give themselfs $200,000 or more raises and when they run out of money they raise taxes on other stuff thus making the people who live in the city suffer from them being stupid. Trust me if Cedar Point or Kings Island closes for good the city where they are in will be in a world of trouble big time. No parks no taxes.

Honestly, I do not think an admissions tax would negatively impact park attendance. To look for evidence, look at my home park, PCW.... there is TWO taxes charged on their tickets... the federal 6% Goods And Services Tax (GST), and a provincial admissions tax........and the last time I checked, the park was consistantly clocking in at over 3 million guests.

One other thing I must add... your taxation system seems pretty dumbfounding. Granted, I live in Ontario, where the municipalities and regional governments do not charge an income tax, but not only do I find it perplexing that they do that down there, but also to be charged it in the jurisdiction that you work in if it is not the same one as the one you live in? (not to mention the rebating that was mentioned above). Thats just odd.

Canada's and the USA's tax system is different then. Most states like to over tax stuff. I know for a fact that the city of Sandusky loves to over tax. Hence the slots and the parking taxes. They have the bed taxes and all that stuff so i say they have no need to tax on parking. Lol.

Dale4life, that's interesting talk for someone who wanted to tax litigation a few threads/stories back. I'm not quite sure where you stand.

The tax doesn't seem like much when you spread it out over all of the visitors, but what's next?? The county will want a piece of the parking and then a chunk of food sales, and so on and so forth. I very seriously doubt this will impact attendance, especially with the good economy we are seeing, and I certainly don't think there is any danger of CP or PKI going out of business. It just has to stop somewhere.

I live in NH. We have no income tax and no sales tax. If you work in MA and live in NH MA will charge you an out of state Residence Income tax. If you live in ME both ME and MA will tax you on your Income. So I know how screwed up taxes can be.

Thing is there not Doing this because of a road. they want to tax The park's Guests so that they can eliminate another tax. Like I said if they want to tax all entertainment. Beaches, Amusement parks, Theaters, etc then that's one thing. but to single out 2 attractions is wrong.
