News: Disney sues city of Anaheim over housing plan

Posted at 4:06 PM EST (2106 GMT)

Feb. 27th, 2007 -- As a last resort to halt the continuation of plans for a residential development in the resort district, Disney officials have filed suit against the city of Anaheim. This is the first time Disney has sued the city in which the iconic "grandfather" of theme parks first set roots over 50 years ago.

The lawsuit was filed in response to the Anaheim City Council's reconsideration to reopen debate on a proposal to build 1,500 condominiums and apartments, 225 units of which is designated for lower-income residents, close to the Disneyland Resort's borders. The project halted earlier month on a split council vote.

For years, Disney has tried to maintain a tourist-friendly environment in the resort district. Prior to the entertainment giant's buff up of the resort district area over the past few years, cheap motels and tacky retail outlets littered the borders of Disneyland, something Walt Disney expressed revulsion at. Due to Disney's persistency and influence in the area, the current resort district now sprawls with upscale restaurants, nightclubs, and retail shops.

Disney officials say the 8,000 or so people who would be living in the proposed units would be out of place in a district designed and centered towards tourist use and patronizing. Disneyland President Ed Grier said allowing the project to go through would set a "dangerous precedent."

Disney prefers that the 26-acre parcel in question be developed as an upscale hotel-condominium project.

I agree. The areas around Disneyland need to kept open for out of area people [hotels, motels, restaurants, etc.]

Why do they want to put low income housing in there? That's just ignorant. They are upsetting a moster with Disney too. lol Why on Earth would you want to cross questionably the greatest entertainment and theme park power on Earth? Why would you do that to your city anyways regardless that it's Disney fighing it? Disney or not, an area like that just shouldn't be ruined after so many years of work to improve it.

Try to look at this from the perspective of the city and the people. You have a large number of poor to lower-middle class citizens working in all these upscale hotels, restaurants, and clubs, and they have great difficulty finding a place to live with rent or a mortgage that they can afford, to the point where their commute is as much as a pain as their job. The affluent (ie, us, Disney suits, et al.) don't do nearly enough to give the working poor a fair shake. These people work their collective tuchus off, and don't get paid nearly enough. They deserve respect, a fair shake in the political process.
