News: Bell's Amusement Park begins dismantling Zingo

Posted at 4:25 PM EST (2125 GMT)

Feb. 27th, 2007 -- Since the middle of January, Bell's Amusement Park in Tulsa, OK has been dismantling its rides and midway in preparation for a possible relocation.

The park's most iconic attraction, the 39-year old Zingo wooden roller coaster, will be dismantled in a time frame of 12 weeks and an estimated five months to rebuild in its new location.

Park owner Robby Bell said his father paid $240,000 in 1968 to build the ride and to have a modern day replica of the ride built today would easily cost $3 million. As a result, the ride is being dismantled piece by piece like an erector set with most of the roller coaster's structural parts retained for storage, while the ride's trackbed (laminated track sections) will be discarded.

With so much work left to do and the nearing deadline of March 8, Bell hopes the fairgrounds will allow for an extension.

YES!

Ah, this not only means that Zingo will live on, but also that they do indeed have plans to re-build the park in a new location.

I was there the day they started taking the steel off the track. I took pictures and posted them in the "Bell's to be turned into a parking lot" thread over a week ago. If you want to see pics go check it out. I will most likely be by the park next weekend to get more pictures of the progress. When I saw the men workign on the track I knew it was to be dismantled and not demolished. The've got the bents and every thing on the structure numbered and labeled as well ( which I suspect they have been for years anyhow) but that also gave me a glimmer of hope. They have retracked about 50 percent of this coaster in the last four to five years and now they have to toss out all that fresh wood. What a shame. Maybe I'll get some as a souvenier! Iv'e already got three of the coaster's original buzz bars, and a road wheel still attached to a hunk of melted chassis!
